Full TN Senate set to vote on bill that forces K-12 schools to check students' legal status
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) — A bill that would allow Tennessee public school systems to deny admission to students who aren't in the country legally goes before the full state Senate Thursday morning. Undocumented student bill passes 8-7 in TN House committee The measure, sponsored by Hixson Republican Bo Watson and co-sponsored by Johnson City Republican Rusty Crowe, also would force all school systems to check the citizenship or legal status of all enrolling students. It gives schools the option of forcing undocumented students to pay tuition or be denied Republicans have joined all Democrats in opposing the bill at the committee it becomes law it will likely face court challenges. A 1982 Supreme Court ruling gave all children in the U.S. the right to a free public education regardless of citizenship or legal it clears the Senate Thursday, the bill would still have to pass the House and gain Gov. NETN lawmakers propose another $100 million in Helene relief
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) — Two local lawmakers are behind an effort to bring another $100 million in Hurricane Helene relief to Northeast Tennessee. State Rep. Timothy Hill and state Sen. Rusty Crowe are sponsoring a bill to create two grant funds to assist individuals and local governments. $50 million would go toward each fund, with additional funding possibly available in the future. General Assembly approves resolution honoring Chief Meteorologist Mark Reynolds' 40 years at WJHL The Hurricane Helene County Relief Fund would distribute grants to counties for infrastructure, remediation, property repairs, and other general recovery efforts. The funds would be distributed to the following counties: Carter County — $10 million Cocke County — $7.5 million Greene County — $6 million Hamblen County — $2 million Hawkins County — $1 million Johnson County — $7.5 million Sullivan County — $1 million Unicoi County — $7.5 million Washington County — $7.5 million The Hurricane Helene Rapid Response Fund would support residents who meet specific criteria in counties declared impacted by the hurricane. It would be administered by the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency, and individuals could apply for assistance online. If approved, the grant funding would be in addition to other Hurricane Helene relief measures the General Assembly passed during a special session earlier this year. $2.1M approved for Unicoi Co. Industrial Park rail system repairs 'We made a significant first step during the special session to support Northeast Tennessee, and this bill aims to build on that progress,' Hill said. 'I'm working closely with the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) every week to find a solution that delivers genuine relief to those devastated by Helene.' The bill was approved by a House subcommittee this week and will go before the State and Local Government Committee, which another local lawmaker, state Rep. John Crawford, chairs. Boones Creek Historical Trust receives $150k grant
WASHINGTON COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Boones Creek Historical Trust received a $150k grant from the Tennessee State Museum. 'Boones Creek Historical Trust is a cornerstone of our region's heritage,' Senator Rusty Crowe said in a news release. 'Beyond its museum, the Trust also hosts an Opry that proudly honors and celebrates the rich traditions and culture of Appalachia and East Tennessee.' TDOT receives $9+ million grant for area debris removal Crowe, Representative Tim Hicks and Representative Rebecca Alexander made the announcement Friday, stating the funding was dedicated to support places impacted by Hurricane Helene. 'The Boones Creek Museum & Opry holds deep historical significance for both our community and our entire state,' Alexander and Hicks said in the release.
