The secret button on your washing machine that can slash your energy bills by £72
WASHING machines are a busy household's best friend, but they can be a drain on your wallet. Luckily, experts have revealed a handy little tip to help make your laundry cheaper. 1 You can save around £72 a year on your energy bills by flicking the spin button before popping wet clothes in the tumble dryer. Miele kitchen appliance expert Ryan Adams, director of Ati Harrogate has revealed why this handy tip can save big money. 'Placing wet clothes directly into a tumble dryer forces the appliance to work much harder. "Running a second spin cycle in the washing machine to remove excess water and untangling items before drying helps the clothes move freely in the drum, reducing strain on the dryer. 'Including a thorough spin cycle before tumble drying can help households potentially save between £29 to £72 annually.' And that's not the only tip guaranteed to save you some cash - Ryan also has strong views when it comes to mixed washing. We often chuck all sorts of clothing and bedding together, but one mixture to avoid is washing towels and bed linen. This combination can also cause damage to your washing machine drum too. Ryan said: 'Washing towels and bed linen in the same load can cause excessive strain on a washing machine. "The added water weight often exceeds the recommended load capacity, potentially damaging the drum shaft and bearings. "Additionally, these items tend to form a single heavy ball during the cycle, which can bounce around and harm the machine's internal parts.' Another tip is to always check pockets, as coins can wreak havoc on washing machines and driers. "These items can bang around inside the drum, leading to expensive repairs. A quick check of pockets before starting a load can save your machines and prevent unnecessary costs.' Finally, another thing to keep in mind when you're next working through a pile of dirty washing is to remember to empty the lint trap. Ryan said: 'Neglecting the lint trap can have serious consequences. "A clogged trap reduces airflow, forcing the dryer to work harder, which not only wastes energy but also risks overheating the appliance. 'Regularly cleaning the lint trap before each drying cycle makes it more efficient and safer, preventing fire hazards.' More ways to save on laundry bills It's not just eco settings that can slash your energy bills when doing the laundry. Make sure you only run the machine when it's fully loaded. Cutting down on a half full cycle each week adds up to significant savings over a year. Consider using colder washes more frequently. A large part of the energy consumer by a machine is to simply heat the water. When drying clothes, try to ditch the tumble drier where possible. Drying clothes outside is easy and quick in the summer. When temperatures are cooler, consider investing in a heated clothes airer which use far less energy than a drier. And put your clothes on an extra spin cycle first to wring out as much water as possible. If you do use a tumbler drier make sure all lint is removed from the filters, which can impact the efficiency of the machine and means it has to work harder and use more energy. Popping an old tennis ball in a tumble drier with your laundry can help clothes to separate out and dry faster to help you use less energy. 4 ways to keep your energy bills low Laura Court-Jones, Small Business Editor at Bionic shared her tips. 1. Turn your heating down by one degree You probably won't even notice this tiny temperature difference, but what you will notice is a saving on your energy bills as a result. Just taking your thermostat down a notch is a quick way to start saving fast. This one small action only takes seconds to carry out and could potentially slash your heating bills by £171.70. 2. Switch appliances and lights off It sounds simple, but fully turning off appliances and lights that are not in use can reduce your energy bills, especially in winter. Turning off lights and appliances when they are not in use, can save you up to £20 a year on your energy bills 3. Install a smart meter Smart meters are a great way to keep control over your energy use, largely because they allow you to see where and when your gas and electricity is being used. 4. Consider switching energy supplier No matter how happy you are with your current energy supplier, they may not be providing you with the best deals, especially if you've let a fixed-rate contract expire without arranging a new one. If you haven't browsed any alternative tariffs lately, then you may not be aware that there are better options out there.

May 13—A nationally known muralist, Portland, Maine-based Ryan Adams is excited to try his talented hands at something new starting today in Champaign. For the next two-plus weeks, he will add color and a message on 8,400-square feet at the popular basketball courts at Douglass Park. "This a first for me," he said, "I have painted street murals before, but a court is much different. I'm beyond excited." He's been planning his "Unite, do right" mural for almost a year. It pays tribute to Frederick Douglass ("I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong") and is a part of the Champaign County African American Heritage Trail. "The significance of a court within a community is huge," he said. "Not only as a gathering place and common ground for people from all walks of life, but it is also a place where people can find love for their sport, refine their skills through dedication and practice, and really become an integral part of their lives." We'll have more on Adams and his work as the project takes shape. "I hope that people feel like they have something special and unique in their neighborhood, a one-of-one piece that brings a vibrant life to the park created just for them," he said. "I hope that gives people pride in their neighborhood, and upon spending time with it, that they dig in to the meaning behind the piece and the remarkable life and work of Frederick Douglass."

Ryan Adams' Belfast concert described as ‘most uncomfortable ever'
Ryan Adams reportedly stormed off stage during what fans described as a 'chaotic' show in Belfast on Saturday. The American singer-songwriter, 50, was playing at the Waterfront Hall to mark the 25th anniversary of his debut solo album, Heartbreaker. However, the gig is said to have ended abruptly after the controversial musician 'threw a tantrum', audience members claimed, while a local reporter described it as 'the most uncomfortable, shambolic live music experience I've ever had'. 'Went to the worst 'concert' I've ever been to tonight in the Waterfront Hall,' one fan posted on X/Twitter. 'Ryan Adams forgot the bit about giving the audience a good performance in return for their hard-earned cash! By performance I don't mean throwing a tantrum dressed up as Oscar Wilde!' When another fan attempted to defend Adams by accusing them of 'ignoring' his pleas for no flash photography, the original poster responded: 'The flash was off! He was annoyed about everything. 'He didn't like how people had to leave their seats to go to the loo. He was annoyed by latecomers, drunks calling for requests and the torchlights used by the ushers. Proper diva stuff.' 'Struggling to describe the chaos of Ryan Adams [in] Belfast,' another audience member said. However, some fans defended Adams' behaviour and said he was upset by fans using the flash function on their phones, as he is epileptic. The Independent has contacted Adams' representative for comment. The Belfast Telegraph reported that Adams abandoned the set halfway through, telling the audience: 'Stop f***ing flashing. I warned you. You could kill me. I have epilepsy and Meniere's disease. F*** you, I'm not coming back until you stop flashing.' Signs had been placed around the venue warning fans against the use of flash photography due to Adams' condition. The musician later returned to the stage after around half an hour, the publication reported, and said he had suffered an epileptic seizure backstage. Another fan alleged that, towards the end of the show, a group near them had 'actively tried to use flash photography to cause another seizure'. Other fans said further incidents added to the 'uncomfortable' tone of the evening, such as Adams apparently hand-delivering a copy of his forthcoming novel, The Greatest Movie Ever Made, to one fan. 'If you haven't been to see Ryan Adams yet… don't,' one disgruntled audience member said. 'Won tickets to see him and still feel like I'm due a refund. Left after three songs. Avoid.' Adams has been attempting to revive his career since 2019, when he was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women, including singer Phoebe Bridgers and his ex-wife, Mandy Moore. A year later, he shared a lengthy apology for his past behaviour, writing: 'There are no words to express how bad I feel about the ways I've mistreated people through my life and career. All I can say is that I'm sorry.'

Weekend snow provides perfect environment for Klondike Scout Skills competition
About 200 scouts packed their bags over the weekend and put their outdoor skills to the test with a friendly competition. The Klondike Scout Skills competition is being held at Custaloga Town Scout Reservation in Mercer County. Snow-heavy winter makes for good times at Peek'n Peak Youth and adult troops worked as a team to get the most points to get prizes and a patch at the end of the day. 'We have [a] two-man saw where the kids learn teamwork, working together pulling a traditional two-man saw and logs. This is a timed event,' said Ryan Adams, committee chairperson of Lakes District of the French Creek Council Scouting America. 'Then we have things like fire building, slingshots, rifle range is open, building tents and shelters in the snow.' Saturday morning, the snow that some people wished wouldn't come our way was everything these scouters wanted and more. The French Creek Council has had to alter previous events with the recent mild winters. 'I think the snow adds a little level of difficulty to it because you have to work around the snow but it does make pushing the sled easier for sure,' said Alex Wildfire, a scout. Each troop designed and built their own sled that was equipped with everything they needed to complete each of the stations. 'We have a fire building kit on the sled, we have a tarp, we have two sticks for a stretcher.''Being an Eagle Scout can help you get into certain colleges easier and job application it'll definitely assist there,' said Wildfire. Wildfire has been a scout since kindergarten and said he has made lifelong friendships and skills — something that is seen across the organization. Road crews preparing for another round of Erie winter weather This year, Boy Scouts of America is celebrating their 115th anniversary and is rebranding to Scouting America. According to the organization, this reflects their ongoing commitment to welcoming every youth and family to experience the benefits of scouting. 'We have some of the oldest councils in the country here in western Pennsylvania,' said Adams. 'And our inclusion of the boys and girls joining together it has been and awesome opportunity to see the growth of this program through the years.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
