Hong Kong trail runners accuse officials of hosting ‘crazy and dangerous' race

Members of Hong Kong's trail running community have described the local athletics association's decision to host a world championship qualifying race in May as 'crazy and dangerous', saying it put runners' health at risk. On Sunday, hundreds of athletes competed in a 62.4km (38.8-mile) race at the Hong Kong Trail Championships in Tai Mei Tuk, chasing qualification for the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Spain in September. There was also a short-course race of 34.3km, and an 11km 'experience group'. Before the Hong Kong Association of Athletics Affiliates (HKAAA) event got under way, local trail runners questioned why the race was taking place when temperatures could soar to 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) and humidity was high. The HKAAA had yet to respond to the Post's request for comment. A social media post by Asia Pacific Adventure Athletes, attributed to its director Ryan Blair, said: 'This is a perfect case of how a sport gets mismanaged (and in this case worse with serious safety and health risks to athletes). Play 'Firstly, they [the HKAAA] are holding a 60km qualifier race tomorrow [Sunday] – this is so crazy and dangerous in May's oppressive SE Asia summer heat and only puts so many runners' health at risk.'

Annan confirmed in relegation play-off after Dumbarton defeat

Annan slumped to a 3-1 defeat at relegated Dumbarton, confirming their place in William Hill League One relegation play-offs. Ryan Blair put the home side ahead before half-time, with Annan seeing defender Scott Hooper sent off soon after the restart for a second caution. Although Tommy Goss equalised on the hour, goals from Tony Wallace and James Hilton settled matters. At the other end of the table, Cove Rangers confirmed their play in the promotion play-offs after a 2-2 draw with Kelty Hearts at Balmoral Stadium. Goals from Adam Emslie and Mitch Megginson, from the spot, had seemingly put Rangers in control, only for the visitors to hit back with two goals in the space of seven minutes just after the hour from Craig Johnston and Ross Cunningham. Queen of South saw off play-off rivals Stenhousemuir 2-0 at Palmerston Park to also make sure of their top-four spot. Inverness beat champions Arbroath 3-0, which mathematically secured their place in League One next season. Alloa came from behind to beat Montrose 2-1 with a late goal from Luke Rankin, which put them above Stenhousemuir into fourth place. Peterhead secured the League Two title with a 1-0 win over promotion rivals East Fife at Balmoor Stadium. Peter Pawlett's goal in the 29th minute proved enough for the win, which left the home side four points clear. Bonnyrigg Rose kept alive their hopes of staying up with a dramatic late 2-1 win over Spartans. Murray Aiken had put Rose ahead with 15 minutes left, only for Blair Henderson to level things up. Aaron Arnott, though, struck in stoppage time to leave Rose two points behind Forfar, who battled to a goalless draw at third-placed Edinburgh City.
