Angels trade first baseman Ryan Noda to Red Sox for cash
The Boston Red Sox acquired first baseman Ryan Noda from the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday in a deal for cash. Noda had been designated for assignment by the Angels before the trade that gives the Red Sox another possible option at first base. Noda was immediately optioned by Boston to Triple-A Worcester following the trade with outfielder Masataka Yoshida getting transferred to the 60-day injured list to make room on the 40-man roster. The Red Sox have been looking for help at first base after losing Triston Casas to a season-ending knee injury earlier this month. The 29-year-old Noda played 164 games for the Oakland Athletics in 2023-24, batting .212 with 17 homers, 58 RBIs and a .713 OPS. He had played 38 games this season at Triple-A Salt Lake this season, batting .148 with four homers, eight RBIs and a .633 OPS.

Red Sox Announce Trade With Angels After Rafael Devers News
The Los Angeles Angels have been surging. Having won six straight games, they sit just five games back of first place in the American League West, and three games back of a Wild Card spot. LA has done all of this with superstar outfielder Mike Trout on the injured list. One team Los Angeles trails in the AL Wild Card race is the Boston Red Sox. Sitting at 25-26, Boston is a half-game better than the 23-25 Angels. On Thursday, these two teams announced a trade that will be especially impactful for the Red Sox as they navigate their Rafael Devers situation. Boston Red Sox designated hitter Rafael Devers (11)Tim Heitman-Imagn Images Following the season-ending left patellar tendon injury to Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas, the team asked Devers to move to first base. The three-time All-Star third baseman declined, leaving Boston searching for answers at that position (via MLB on Fox). Advertisement Amid this news, the Red Sox announced on Thursday they had acquired first baseman Ryan Noda from the Angels. Noda was designated for assignment by the Angels, and had yet to appear in a game for them this season. In his two-year MLB career, the left-handed first baseman owns a 104 OPS+ in 501 at-bats. The Angels also announced this move on their end (via Angels PR), revealing they had received cash considerations from Boston in exchange for Noda. While he has limited MLB experience, Noda will provide organizational depth at a position of need for Boston, especially since it seems Devers will not be taking any reps at first. Map shows biggest population losers and winners in Mass. from new census data
The U.S. Census released new numbers this month that show clear shifts in population for Massachusetts. And the news isn't great for Western Mass. or for Cape Cod. From July 1, 2023, to July 1, 2024, 282 of the 351 Massachusetts cities and towns saw increases to their populations. Seven communities remained exactly the same and 62 saw declines. But the communities were not evenly distributed across the state. Nearly all of Cape Cod and Western Massachusetts saw declines. Meanwhile, the northern suburbs of Boston had three of the top fastest growing communities in the state. Below, town-by-town a map clearly shows the growth and shrinking areas of the state, with those gaining population in green and those losing it in pink. The map can also be viewed by visiting this link. The biggest population loser by percent was the historic town of Concord. Concord saw a 1% drop in population from 18,273 in 2023 to 18,092 in 2024. On the other side of the spectrum, Stoneham in the northern Boston suburbs gained 6.3% more population in 2024, rising from 23,098 to 24,550. Two communities that border Stoneham — Woburn and Wakefield — were also in the top five population gainers. A table showing all Massachusetts cities and towns is at the bottom of this story, and can also be viewed here. Stoneham, Middlesex County — gained 6.3% (1,452 people) Pelham, Hampshire County — gained 5.6% (71 people) Woburn, Middlesex County — gained 4.3% (1,812 people) Wakefield, Middlesex County — gained 3.9% (1,106 people) North Reading, Middlesex County — gained 3.2% (511 people) Ashland, Middlesex County — gained 3.2% (599 people) Revere, Suffolk County — gained 2.9% (1,736 people) Millis, Norfolk County — gained 2.9% (1,736 people) Dover, Norfolk County — gained 2.5% (148 people) Norfolk, Norfolk County — gained 2.4% (285 people) The biggest population losers in the state tended to be smaller communities, so the loss of just a handful of people wound up getting some of them close to the top. Of the top 10 fastest shrinking towns, six were in Hampshire County. Concord, Middlesex County — lost 1% (181 people) Southampton, Hampshire County — lost 0.7% (42 people) Dennis, Barnstable County — lost 0.7% (100 people) Goshen, Hampshire County — lost 0.6% (6 people) Cummington, Hampshire County — lost 0.5% (4 people) Wendell, Franklin County — lost 0.4% (4 people) Huntington, Hampshire County — lost 0.4% (9 people) Chesterfield, Hampshire County — lost 0.4% (5 people) South Hadley, Hampshire County — lost 0.4% (73 people) New Ashford, Berkshire County — lost 0.4% (1 person) Man killed in Marlborough fatal house fire identified Wastewater overflow in Connecticut River falls to 543 million gallons in 2024 PVPC working on two-decade plan for bikers and pedestrians Ump with history of bad calls admits he got one wrong in Red Sox game Who is Ryan Noda?
