#SHOWBIZ: Ryoko Hirosue diagnosed with bipolar disorder

TOKYO: Weeks after allegedly assaulting a nurse, Japanese actress Ryoko Hirosue has announced that she will be suspending all entertainment activities to focus on her health issues. An official site for the 44-year-old star posted a notice on May 2 explaining that Hirosue has been receiving treatment at a hospital in Tokyo after she was released from police custody on April 16. She was arrested on April 8 for allegedly attacking a nurse at a hospital where she was taken to following a car accident. The notice, put up by Hirosue's agency R.H., said that she has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a mental health condition characterised by extreme mood swings, and hyperthyroidism, a condition that can lead to unintended weight loss and heart palpitations. "We deeply regret how both Hirosue herself and the people around her dismissed her illness and suffering as simply poor health. Hirosue will now take a break from all entertainment activities and focus on recovering her mental and physical health for the time being," the agency said. It added that the disclosure of Hirosue's illness was not to escape accountability for her legal troubles. The agency also said: "We will continue to sincerely cooperate with the police in all their investigations." Hirosue's suspension comes after a string of bad press for the star, who rose to fame in the 1990s with TV series such as Beach Boys (1997) and I Love My Dad More Than Anything In The World (1998). She has also starred in films like the Oscar-winning Departures (2008). Aside from the alleged assault, Hirosue was exposed in June 2023 by Japanese tabloids for an extramarital affair with Japanese chef Shusaku Toba, 46. She announced her divorce from her husband, Japanese artist Jun Izutsu, 51, a month later. Hirosue and Izutsu have a son, 14, and a daughter, nine. She also has a 21-year-old son from her first marriage to Japanese designer Takahiro Okazawa, 49. The scandal caused her then-agency Flamme, which had represented her for 25 years, to suspend her activities indefinitely. They parted ways in February 2024 and she set up her own agency R.H.

Actress Ryoko Hirosue being treated for bipolar disorder and hyperthyroidism

Ryoko Hirosue walks on the red carpet at the Tokyo International Film Festival in 2022. Actress Ryoko Hirosue will take a break from showbiz after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and hyperthyroidism, her agency said Friday. Her agency said on its website that Hirosue, 35, has been hospitalized at a medical institution in Tokyo since being released by police on April 16 after her arrest on April 7 on suspicion of assaulting a nurse at a hospital following a traffic accident. The agency commented: "We deeply regret that we dismissed her illness and suffering with words like 'poor health.' For the time being, Hirosue will take a break from all showbiz activities and focus on recovering mentally and physically.' In the accident on April 7, Hirosue rear-ended a truck on the Shin-Tomei Expressway while driving with a male passenger who suffered a fracture. The truck driver was uninjured. Hirosue sustained minor injuries and was brought to the hospital in Shimada, Shizuoka Prefecture. There, she allegedly kicked a female nurse multiple times and scratched her arm after the nurse sought to prevent her from wandering around. According to a statement posted earlier on her website, the incident with the nurse occurred after the accident "left her in a panic." Hirosue reached a settlement with the nurse. No alcohol or illicit drugs were detected in Hirosue's system after tests by police. Hirosue, who rose to fame in the 1990s, appeared in a string of TV dramas such as "Beach Boys" and starred in films including the Oscar-winning "Departures." © Japan Today/KYODO

Inside the abusive world of Japanese nursing: ‘violence was common'

The most frightening experience of Yoko Tsukamoto's nursing career began when a psychiatric patient grabbed her by the neck and attempted to strangle her. It ended only when her colleagues managed to pull the man away. Advertisement Never in her 20 years as a nurse had Tsukamoto faced such acute physical danger. Yet the incident, she says, is just one in a litany of issues plaguing Japan 's hospitals. From verbal abuse and physical assaults to sexual harassment and mistreatment by patients' families, violence and harassment against medical staff are far more common than many people realise. But now, the arrest of actress Ryoko Hirosue has brought long-simmering frustrations to the surface. Hirosue, best known internationally for her roles in Wasabi, produced by Luc Besson, and the Oscar-winning Departures, was arrested on April 8 for allegedly kicking and scratching a nurse at a hospital in Shizuoka prefecture. The incident occurred while Hirosue was being treated after a minor traffic accident. The 44-year-old actress's arrest, though not among the most violent cases, has opened the floodgates for healthcare workers to share their anger and experiences. She believes urgent changes are needed to protect medical professionals.
