Major car brands recall several vehicles over safety issues

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) says it has been informed by car manufacturers that several brands are being recalled over safety issues. These are Jeep Wrangler, Chrysler 300c, Citroën C4, DS4 and DS5 models, Mercedes-Benz CLA (118), S-class (model series 223), Audi, VW Polo sedan and Volvo XC90. The NCC said Stellantis South Africa told them that the Jeep-Wrangler and Jeep-Wrangler Chrysler 300c models would be recalled due to a defect in the Takata airbag. 'According to the supplier, the passenger airbag inflator may rupture due to excessive internal pressure during normal airbag deployment events. In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could strike the vehicle occupants, which may result in serious injury or death,' the NCC said. It said the Citroën C4, DS4 and DS5 models, distributed from 2009 to 2016, would be recalled due to an airbag inflator that may burst. 'The potentially high energetic deployment of the inflator may lead to metal fragments detaching from the bursting inflator, and these parts could fly in the direction of the driver or occupants in the vehicle, capable of causing serious injury or possibly death in a worst-case scenario.' The NCC said Mercedes-Benz AG South Africa informed them that the length of the brake hoses on the rear axle of certain CLA (118 platforms) and S-class (model series 223) vehicles might not have met the specifications. 'This, according to the supplier, will lead to a reduced braking performance in one of the two brake circuits, increasing the risk of an accident caused by the brake fluid loss.' Audi South Africa says it's recalling 46 of the affected Audi-Tron GT vehicles. 'This is caused by some individual cell modules of the high-voltage battery that may display technical irregularities. The high-voltage battery may overheat, resulting in an acute fire hazard, with the associated risk of severe fatal injuries to people inside and or outside the vehicle, as well as significant property damage,' Audi said. Volkswagen is recalling 905 affected VW Polo sedans. 'According to the supplier, the latch plates for the rear seat belt were produced with insufficient hardness. Therefore, in the event of powerful deceleration (accident or hard braking), there may be a reduced retention or protective effect and related increased risk of injury.' Volvo Car South Africa said the recall of 27 Volvo (XC90 models years 2020-2022) is due to potential issues with the high-voltage battery which may lead to overheating. Consumers are urged to visit the nearest authorised dealership for a check or repair/ replacements where necessary.

Report: AMG EV Supercar Concept to Lead a Mercedes Product Offensive

Mercedes-Benz will unveil an electric supercar concept from its AMG performance division this year, according to a report from . The concept will preview the powertrain that will underpin the dedicated AMG electric sedan and SUV that are due in the next two years. The report also claims that Mercedes will launch a new SUV with both hybrid and electric setups, as well as a heavily reworked that will adopt the storied name. Two weeks ago, Mercedes-Benz declared that the new CLA—which we just drove in prototype form—will kick off "the most intense product launch" program in the automaker's nearly 100-year history. In the announcement, Mercedes confirmed several new or significantly refreshed vehicles which will arrive before 2027, including the face-lifted S-class that we recently spied testing in Sweden. Now a report from Autocar suggests that Mercedes-Benz's EV push will be led by an extreme supercar concept from the high-performance AMG division. The electric Mercedes-AMG supercar will be shown as a concept later this year, Autocar reported, and will draw upon the radical Vision One-Eleven concept from 2023. The sleek two-door will preview the potent electric powertrain that will underpin dedicated AMG EVs due in the next couple of years, which will include both a sedan—serving as a next generation for the AMG GT sedan—and an SUV. According to one of Autocar's sources, who was described as a "high-ranking insider," the concept "will be the fastest-accelerating car AMG has ever produced." The rapid acceleration will be thanks to a new axial-flux electric motor developed by the British company Yasa, acquired by Mercedes in 2021. The supercar concept will also supposedly debut a next-generation battery, which might be a solid-state unit and will utilize input from the company's High Performance Powertrain division that crafts the hybrid powertrains for Mercedes's F1 cars. We've reached out to Mercedes for comment on the AMG supercar and will update this story when we've heard back. The supercar concept is just one reveal among dozens coming from Mercedes, and the automaker confirmed three other products in its announcement. The CLA arrives first and will come with both an electric powertrain and a 48-volt electrified four-cylinder engine. Mercedes also announced electric versions of the GLC SUV, C-class sedan, and E-class sedan, continuing the brand's shift away from the EQ moniker and toward a strategy of offering multiple powertrains under the same nameplate. The GLC EV should debut this year, while the other two are expected to emerge later. The GLC EV and C-class EV will share a platform and AMG-tuned variants for both vehicles are in the cards. Both the GLC and C-class EVs should feature single-motor/rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor/all-wheel-drive variants. Along with those confirmed models, Autocar reports that the CLA will be accompanied by a new GLB. The compact SUV is expected to grow slightly in size and share powertrains with the CLA sedan. The electric version will also employ the GLB badge, signaling the end of the EQB nameplate. 2026 will bring the refreshed S-class, wearing a new face and running new software that should make better use of the screen-covered dashboard. A more advanced Level 3 autonomous driving system will also improve on the Drive Pilot setup currently found in the Mercedes flagship. The electric EQS is also set for a thorough reworking and is expected to adopt the S-class name despite riding on a different platform. AMG's first dedicated EV will be unveiled in 2026, with the aforementioned sedan coming first ahead of the SUV version in 2027. Mercedes has already teased both models testing. The sporty sedan and SUV will both ride on a new platform called Other upcoming models include refreshes for the gas-powered C-class, EQS SUV, EQE sedan, and EQE SUV. The gas-powered GLE and GLS SUVs are also due for a facelift to extend their life span to around 2030. Mercedes is also expected to release more details on the baby G-class, recently confirmed by the automaker, in 2026 ahead of a 2027 debut. The baby G-class is expected to be related to the updated GLB. 2026 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Spied with Three-Pointed Star Headlights

Mercedes-Benz confirmed last week that a refreshed 2026 is on its way, and we spotted the updated sedan testing in Sweden. The S-class prototype—which could be a Maybach model—has a reworked front end, including headlights with LED three-pointed stars, similar to the taillights on the 2024 E-class. The 2026 S-class could get updated powertrains, and Mercedes has confirmed that the V-12 engine is sticking around. The Mercedes-Benz S-class is among the brand's most important models, serving alongside the G-class as the pinnacle of the luxury automaker's lineup. The flagship sedan may not move a ton of units—its 8809 U.S. sales last year only beat out the GT and SL sports cars among the company's gas-powered vehicles—but the S-class has been critical to Mercedes-Benz's reputation as a purveyor of opulence. Now, the brand is readying an update to the S-class for the 2026 model year, and we just spotted a prototype of the refreshed luxo-barge testing in Sweden. Amid a flurry of announcements last week, which included the confirmation of a "baby" G-wagen, Mercedes said it was developing a "major update" for the S-class that would go on sale in 2026. While Mercedes didn't spill any details, the spy photos give a taste of what to expect from the S-class's visual changes. The most obvious difference is the headlight design, which appears to have adopted a slightly different shape. The headlights also feature an LED three-pointed star motif, a theme that first appeared on the taillights of the 2024 E-class. The shape of the grille also seems to be a bit different, stretching lower on the bumper, while the bottom vents also appear to be reworked. Another curious detail is a cutout in the camouflage on the front fender for a forward-facing camera, which could form part of a bolstered driver-assistance package. The 2024 S-class, along with the electric EQS, already offers Drive Pilot, a Level 3 autonomous-driving system that allows the driver to both keep their hands off the steering wheel and their eyes off the road for lengthy periods. The rear end carries over mostly unchanged, although the taillights look to also include a three-pointed star element in a similar vein to the headlights. We think the prototype seen here represents a Maybach model, due to the extra chrome trim around the side windows and the camouflage on the C-pillar, where a Maybach logo typically resides on the ultra-luxury models. The wheels aren't as glamorous as the units normally found on Maybachs, but that's likely just because this is a prototype. The test unit next to the Maybach appears to be a standard S-class and shares many of the same changes at the front. Obviously, a "major update" for the S-class should bring more than just visual tweaks. That could mean changes to the S-class's powertrains, which currently include a 429-hp inline-six, a 496-hp V-8, and a plug-in-hybrid setup. The Maybach versions come with either the V-8 or a 621-hp V-12. Although both the inline-six and V-8 already come with a 48-volt hybrid system, we wouldn't be surprised to see more electrical assistance as Mercedes aims to remain in compliance with increasingly strict European emissions regulations. Mercedes did confirm last week that the V-12 will remain in production, although it will only be available in certain markets. We should learn more about the 2026 Mercedes-Benz S-class later this year.
