Saints agree deal to make German youth international first signing of summer

SAINTS have agreed a deal for their first signing of the transfer window, with centre-back Joshua Quarshie set to join from Hoffenheim. The 20 year old defender has made 28 appearances in the second tier of German football, and stands at around six-foot five-inches tall. Hoffenheim's Quarshie spent last season on loan at Greuther Furth and clocked in the fastest sprint speed in 2. Bundesliga, at 37.04km/h - faster than Kamaladen Sulemana's record speed at the 2022 World Cup. The Daily Echo reported that Saints were close to completing the signing of an unnamed player from Germany earlier this week, and that player has been confirmed as Quarshie. 🚨🔴⚪️ Excl: Southampton agree deal to sign 20 year old centre back Joshua Quarshie to Southampton FC. €3.5m transfer fee to Hoffenheim, medical done. — Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) May 28, 2025 Fabrizio Romano added that Saints will pay a fee of around £3m for the German youth international, who has represented his country's under-20s on 11 occasions. Quarshie, contracted until 2027 at his current club, was also called up to Germany's under-21s in March but was left as an unused substitute. Two-footed Quarshie is considered a first team signing and will link up with Will Still's squad when Saints return for pre-season at the end of June. The summer transfer window opens officially on Sunday, June 1, before closing briefly on June 10 and reopening on June 16, until September 1. Former Hoffenheim head of scouting, Saints technical director Johannes Spors is overseeing the St Mary's side's transfers and recruitment. Asked about transfers in March, Spors told us: "I think players need to be physically strong. They need to be fast. They need to have some aggressiveness in their mentality." Spors is also set to hire Hoffenheim's youth squad planner, 36 year old Tim Lederer, who has worked with Quarshie, to be Saints head of scouting.

Ramsdale earns England return in Tuchel's first Three Lions squad

SAINTS goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has been named in new England boss Thomas Tuchel's first Three Lions squad ahead of this month's World Cup qualifiers. Ramsdale, 26, returns to the England squad having been forced to withdraw from November's camp after fracturing his finger in a 2-0 defeat at Wolves. He could add to his five caps, but is one of four goalkeepers in the 26-man squad, alongside Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson and James Trafford. 'Joe was outstanding' - Saints loanee nets first brace as he makes senior point

SAINTS loanee Joe O'Brien-Whitmarsh netted his first professional brace to help Accrington Stanley to a 5-0 win over Newport County. Accrington made a dream start after four minutes when Ireland youth international O'Brien-Whitmarsh raced forward and fired low into the net. O'Brien-Whitmarsh, 19, who scored his first EFL goal last week, later celebrated a brace after 53 minutes, rifling home from 20 yards. Manager John Doolan said: 'Joe was outstanding, his second-half goal was world class, both with his left foot, you can't ask for any more." Having scored four goals in 11 Premier League 2 appearances, O'Brien-Whitmarsh now has three goals in three stars for League Two Accrington. The midfielder, who captained Saints under-21s before departing on loan in January, hopes to push for a senior place at St Mary's next season. Elsewhere, Saints striker Dom Ballard netted his first goal for relegation-threatened Cambridge United, against Blackpool in League One. The Tangerines turned the match around despite Ballard's third-minute chipped opener and won 2-1, leaving Cambridge 10 points adrift of safety.
