GARRY'S DOUBLE: CANDELARI (NAP) AND SERENITY PRAYER
Canderlari (4:20) can burn bright for Francis Graffard in the Gold Cup on Day 3 of this year's Royal Ascot. The Chantilly handler excels on his UK raids and he has the ideal contender to lift this historic prize. The gelding showed abundant class and stamina when routing Amarena Dodville at his home venue. Given time to develop, he put that debut to good use when crushing Kapani on his comeback there. The four-year-old stayed unbeaten at that track by brushing aside Double Major in better company. That form led Graffard to go for even more ambitious targets over two miles on Turf at Longchamp. The bay duly stayed upwardly mobile with a cracking third to Presage Nocturne in a hot Group 3. He looked even better when hammering Sevenna's Knight in the Group 1 Prix Vicomtesse Vigier. The rising star surged clear at the business end so he can confirm his place at the top table up in trip.
Sandal's Song (2:30) can walk all over his rivals for George Weaver in the Norfolk Stakes. The juvenile wasn't overly well-fancied ahead of his debut at Gulfstream Park last month. However, the colt showed potent speed to slam the exciting Squire in a red-hot contest. There is plenty more to come from this high-energy type who can claim a warm Group 2.
Sing Us A Song (3:05) can call the tune for Ralph Beckett in the King George V Stakes. The colt showed real promise when fifth to the mighty Field Of Gold on debut at Newmarket. He raised his game again when third behind Hopewell Rock in another fair event at Newbury.
The three-year-old clearly relished tackling 1m 2f when chinning Flamenco Bay at Goodwood. The son of Camelot was expected to become a useful performer over middle distance this year. He confirmed that impression when hacking-up from Urban Glimpse on his return at Sandown. The bay was staying-on strongly up the hill so he can score up in trip for a yard who target this race.
Serenity Prayer (3:40) looks simply divine for Andrew Balding in the Ribblesdale Stakes. The three-year-old was well-supported ahead of her belated debut in a Newbury novice in April. She duly delighted her backers by decisively defeating Lady Ridgewood in a typically strong event. That pleasing performance saw the filly pitched straight into the Group 2 Musidora Stakes at York. She found only the hugely talented Whirl too good in that recognised Oaks trial on the Knavesmire. Balding decided to skip the Epsom Classic so she can reward his patience by taking a strong contest.
The top trainer can also take the Buckingham Palace Stakes with Never So Brave (6:10). The gelding chased home Ancient Wisdom on debut for Sir Michael Stoute at Newmarket. He was unlucky to meet another star when second to Vandeek down in trip at Nottingham. The four-year-old deservedly opened his account in emphatic fashion on his return at Thirsk. He built on that effort when routing Witness Stand on his switched to handicaps at Chester. However, he seemed to lose his way in better company for that trainer for most of last year. The bay was revitalised by a move to Kingsclere when chinned by Myal back on the Roodee. The strong-traveller remains fairly-treated so he can claim the biggest success of his career.
The Britannia Stakes is a puzzling as ever but I'm going for Roger Varian's Teroomm (5:00). The colt went into plenty of notebooks when fourth to Bridget's View on debut at Kempton. Given time to develop, he wasn't seen again until his comeback in a Bath maiden in April. The three-year-old was very keen early-on but still brushed aside the useful High On Hope. He then showed a mix of class and guts to outpoint fellow improver Parole D'oro at Thirsk. Varian opted to pitch his charge into the valuable Haydock Silver Bowl on his handicap bow. He didn't enjoy the clearest of passage but finished powerfully to cosily dismiss Tilted Kilt. The son of Iffraaj scored with plenty in hand so he can bag another big prize for his top yard.
Detain (5:35) can seize a tight renewal of the Hampton Court Stakes for Team Gosden. The colt looked smart when storming home from Afentiko on his first outing at Kempton. He boosted his reputation again with an impressive defeat of Fosroc at the same venue. The bay hated the soft going when sixth to Hotazhell in the Group 1 Futurity at Doncaster. He bounced back when comfortably dispatching Luther back on all-weather at Chelmsford. The three-year-old wasn't disgraced when sixth in the French 2000 Guineas at Longchamp. He stayed 1m 2f well when a fine third to Camille Pissarro in the French Derby at Chantilly. The Juddmonte raider remains unexposed over that trip so he can triumph down in class.
