92-year-old man found dead amid intense house fire in Muscoy

A 92-year-old man was found dead after firefighters extinguished an intense residential blaze in Muscoy early Saturday. The fire was first reported just before 2 a.m. in the 2800 block of North State State Street, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department. Firefighters responded to multiple reports that a home and backyard were on fire. "The first arriving engine company reported heavy smoke and flames coming from behind a single-story, single-family home," according to a SBCFD statement. "Firefighters quickly advanced hose lines to the rear of the property, where they encountered intense fire conditions involving multiple sheds, vehicles, and surrounding debris." Neighbors told firefighters there was a 92-year-old man who lived in a backhouse behind the main home. "Due to heavy fire engulfing the ADU, crews were initially unable to conduct a search," the statement said. "Once the fire was knocked down, crews discovered the body of a 92-year-old male inside. Sadly, he was pronounced deceased at the scene." At one point, firefighters were forced to retreat from positions on the roof due to the intensity of the fire. Two-dozen firefighters ultimately managed to extinguish the flames. The cause remained under investigation. The fire caused an estimated $350,000 in property damage, officials said. "San Bernardino County Fire reminds all residents of the importance of having working smoke alarms in every living space, especially in detached units such as ADUs. These alarms are critical in providing early warning and saving lives," according to the statement. San Bernardino County firefighters use Snowcat to rescue dozens in middle of winter storm

San Bernardino County firefighters were busy putting their specialty resources to the test in the midst of the latest winter storm to hit Southern California. Video shows rescue teams inside of the department's Snowcat, a powerful vehicle used to traverse through deep snow, on Thursday in Fawnskin, where dozens of people were stranded from YMCA Camp Whittle, according to a post on X from the department. "This was after up to 300 camp attendees had fled the camp on foot, trudging through snow to a point where roads were clear enough for waiting buses to stage," the post said. Some people were still at the camp, which had run out of provisions as the conference ended. No one was injured throughout the entirety of the incident. Firefighters say that the rescue efforts would've been much more difficult without their Snowcat. "These vehicles get through just about anything. They're on tracks and they roll very smoothly and they get us where we need to go," said San Bernardino County firefighter Ryan Beckers. "It would've been really difficult and people would've been cold and potentially had exposure issues if we weren't able to get up there and do this with these vehicles." SBCFD has Snowcat vehicles in Wrightwood, Twin Peaks, Lake Arrowhead and Fawnskin. Fire engines at those stations are also 4x4 enabled, and all ambulances carry snow chains as well, firefighters said.
