These hi-tech appliances lack fridge benefits
Sue Casiglia of North Ryde has noted a number of news stories on 'smart' fridges: 'They can do anything, it seems, including letting you know when you are low on a certain product. And all it takes is a knock on the glass front, and it magically illuminates the internal light so you can see what you've got in there. Beware of any future 'smart' additions that will warn you against eating something because of its calorie count. It ought to be 'smart' enough to know that we don't want to hear anything like that!' 'As a student who could only afford a black and white TV (C8), I nevertheless enjoyed watching those celebrated snooker geniuses on Pot Black (including Joe and Fred Davis),' recalls Ian Glendon of Ashmore (Qld). 'On one occasion, commentator 'Whispering' Ted Lowe, in typical hushed tones said, 'for those of you who are watching in black and white, the pink is next to the green'.' 'It was great to hear about DCE and SBW in the SMH today,' says Jim Pollitt (aka JBP) of Wahroonga. 'I was like LOL.' 'Radio XLFM in Cooma is advertising in the trade press for an announcer,' notes Peter Riley of Penrith. 'One of the requirements for the job is 'excitable' personality which Webster's D ictionary defines as 'volatile, anxious, unstable and hyperactive'. Rock on!' 'Lan-Choo tea rewards (C8) are not to be sniffed at,' declares Joy Everett of Valla Beach. 'I still use a box grater redeemed in 1979. Prestige brand, stainless steel, made in Belgium. Six types of grating in one. Fabulous quality, still sharp. But it took about 144 packet tops collected by my mother and me.' 'Plainly, the perps stealing 'Angus' street signs (C8) are fans of AC/DC,' asserts Dave Horsfall of North Gosford. Dorothy Gliksman of Cedar Brush Creek has more on the door-to-door sisterhood (C8): 'My mother must've been the first woman to go from door-to-door in what was the early 1950s, to sell frocks to women. The areas she covered were Botany, Mascot and nearby areas. She came from war-torn Europe, learned to drive, spoke a little English, and with those skills, plus a huge amount of self-confidence, managed to gain the trust of these women and over the years, built up her reputation to go on and open her own fashion boutique. Her ingenuity and hard work rubbed off on her children.'

A no-show and drug slurs: SBW comes out swinging ahead of Gallen fight
'I'm going into the ring with someone who has done that before,' he said. This was straight out of the Gallen playbook. For all the notoriety Williams has earned while criss-crossing between the codes, none of it is the result of trash talk. It was expected that Gallen would have to shoulder the responsibility for promoting their fight, one first mooted when both were in the prime of their footballing careers. And yet, at what was meant to be their first face-off, Gallen was nowhere to be found, and the verbal sparring was left to the normally mild-mannered Williams. Without even mentioning 'ASADA' or 'peptides' or 'Stephen Dank″, Williams opened up old wounds that may never heal. Whether SBW did so due to genuine doping concerns, or to simply land an early psychological blow, remains unclear. Either way, his team asked for both fighters to undergo mandatory drug testing and claimed the other side didn't agree. 'The contract that I saw, there was no drug testing,' Williams said. 'If the people who are putting this fight on have any decency about them, there would be drug testing.' While Gallen did not attend the press conference, he was only too happy to respond later. 'At the end of the day, what happened at Cronulla was a terrible thing – no one is more angry about it than I am,' he said. 'Here we are 14 years later and I'm still dealing with it, while the bloke who was responsible is allowed to live his life like nothing happened. 'My entire team was found to be duped and doped, that was the wording put out by the government. 'And he [Williams] wants to throw me under the bus ... it's the pot calling the kettle black. 'He admitted to going on four-day benders, taking drugs. A doctor told him he had that many drugs in his system he should be dead. 'What's worse? Something that was given to someone by their club, that wasn't on any banned list at the time, or someone who took illegal drugs.' Williams wrote in his book, Sonny Bill Williams: You Can't Stop the Sun from Shining, about going on benders early in his NRL career, and that a doctor had once told him he 'had so many drugs in my system I could have died'. Gallen added that he had told the promoters that he was comfortable being drug tested for the fight. Gallen's contribution to the actual press conference came via a message he had recorded on Instagram. In it, he claimed that the fight was taking place on Williams' terms, including the former All Black's insistence it be held over eight two-minute rounds. 'Hey guys, right about now I'm supposed to be at the press conference for me versus Sonny Bill Williams, but clearly I'm not,″ Gallen posted. 'This whole negotiation process has been about Sonny, so I thought I would leave it that way … 'Everything is always about Sonny. Sonny gets what Sonny wants. 'I didn't want to steal his thunder today. Sonny can go and say whatever he wants to say. He's a big enough star to carry this fight all on his own … I'm just going to turn up on the night and give it a good, old crack. 'I hope you feel like I've wasted your time mate, because I feel like I've wasted my time the last 10 years. But finally you've built up the courage to jump in the ring with me, July 16, we'll get it done … I'll give you some attention very soon. Loading 'I hope you're training hard. While I'm past my best, everyone knows that I've still got enough left to beat you.' The fight will take place at Qudos Bank Arena on July 16 and will be shown live and exclusively on Stan pay-per-view. A stacked undercard will belatedly include, after two false starts, a showdown between former UFC star Tyson Pedro and Kris Terzievski, the latter one of only two professional boxers that have defeated Gallen. Gallen did not turn up to Liberty Hall at Moore Park's Entertainment Quarter for Tuesday's official fight launch. Did Williams have concerns that he wouldn't turn up on fight night? 'Nah,' Williams said. 'He definitely wants his pay cheque.'

Sonny Bill Williams vs Paul Gallen confirmed for July 16 in Sydney
Photo: PHOTOSPORT After 10 years of talk, the score will be settled in the ring. A long-time fantasy match up, it was confirmed today that dual-code superstar Sonny Bill Williams will box former league international Paul Gallen in eight, two-minute rounds on July 16 in Sydney. The pair have been exchanging verbal jabs for the better part of a decade, Gallen alleging the William's boxing recorded is inflated by wins over far lesser opponents, while SBW has labelled Gallen a narcissist. And they haven't stopped. "I'm gonna smash his face, simple as that," Williams told media today. "This type of character having a go at mine, I see that as a compliment. This is a bloke that loves to talk, and talk like he's the toughest guy in the world. This is not how I like to be as a person, but he brings it out in me, how he carries himself is everything I dislike." It will be Williams' first walk to the ring since he suffered his first career loss, a knockout at the hands of UFC legend Mark Hunt in 2022. Gallen meanwhile has not fought since beating fellow Australian league star Justin Hodges, also in in 2022. Adding fuel to the feud, Gallen opted to no-show today's press conference because "it's all about Sonny". "Everything is always about Sonny. Sonny gets what Sonny wants. I didn't want to steal his thunder today, so he can go and say whatever he wants to say. I wanted to fight early in the year. Sonny wanted to fight later in the year because it didn't suit him, so we're fighting later in the year." Paul Gallen boxing. Photo: PHOTOSPORT Gallen said he hoped that Williams felt as though his time was wasted at today's press conference. "I feel like you've wasted my time the past 10 years. But finally you built up the courage to jump in the ring with me. While I'm past my best we all know that I've still got enough left in me to beat you. I'll see you soon champion." Both men are expected to pocket $1million for the bout. New Zealand cruiserweight David Nyika will also return to action on the card for the first time since his devastating KO loss at the hands of Jai Opetaia. His opponent is yet to be confirmed.
