Selangor implements sustainable recycling model via SELKitar
SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Recycling (SELKitar) Programme, which was launched yesterday, is the beginning of a long-term movement that focuses on circular economy, waste separation from sources and shared responsibility among stakeholders. State Public Health and Environment Committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said that as the most advanced and populous state in the country, Selangor generates over 7,000 tonnes of solid waste daily, with most of them still ending up being dumped at landfills. 'Recognising this fact, the state government has made sustainable waste management the foundation of the state's environmental strategy, namely prioritising source separation, advancing circular economy practices and enhancing the role of local authorities in driving long-term transformation,' she said in a statement today. Yesterday, the Selangor government, through KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM), signed a collaboration with Nestle Malaysia to strengthen recycling through door-to-door collection under SELKitar, which is expected to begin in May in several areas under the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) and Sepang Municipal Council (MPS). Elaborating, Jamaliah said that through the First Selangor Plan (RS-1), the state government has begun switching from the 'collect and dispose' model to an approach that focuses on recycling based on resource efficiency, value recovery and citizen responsibility. She said the launch of phase one of the SELKitar Programme, which was witnessed by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari yesterday, is an important step towards realising that approach. 'The SELKitar Programme is not just a strong environmental policy for Selangor but one that also reflects a new approach to engaging the community in sustainable waste management. 'It reflects the belief that sustainability is not just a slogan but about creating an ecosystem that functions for all parties,' she said. Jamalliah added that SELKitar also has a long-term vision, where its infrastructure is supported by education, awareness and behavioural change.

Taman Sri Muda Pump House Fully Functional
'Alhamdulillah, we have resolved the problem on Wednesday and Thursday (April 16) when TNB has already channel power for the pump to function. He said the failure of the flood control pump system, which was one of the causes of delays in flood control efforts in the area during heavy rains, was resolved when Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) reconnected the electricity supply to the pump house involved. SHAH ALAM, April 22 (Bernama) -- The Taman Sri Muda Pump House here was fully functional as of last Wednesday, said Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. He said this at a press conference after the signing ceremony of a cooperation agreement between KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) and Nestle Malaysia for the SELKitar Programme here today. 'Previously, TNB was unable to provide energy due to certain factors and we can see that last Saturday (April 19) there was heavy rain for two hours but there was no flooding in the Taman Sri Muda area,' he said. On April 13, Amirudin was reported to have said that the failure of the flood control pump system in Selangor was among the causes of delays in efforts to control floods in critical areas and his party would immediately contact TNB to ensure that the energy supply was distributed immediately. Yesterday, the media reported that more than 1,500 residents gathered peacefully to demand an immediate solution to the flood issue in Taman Sri Muda, Kota Kemuning and Batu 8 here, which were frequently affected since the 2021 floods. Commenting further, Amirudin said he understood the trauma and problems faced by the residents and the government had also taken several immediate steps such as establishing a special task force involving various agencies including the federal level to overcome the flood issue in addition to instructing Infrastructure Exco Datuk Izham Hashim to identify immediate actions to address the flash flood issue in Taman Sri Muda. 'I understand the residents' problems but what we have seen is that flooding has occurred less than five times since the major flood in 2021. '... and the flood incident did not require the relocation of residents except for the latest or last flood incident on (April 11),' he said. Amirudin said that apart from the pump house which was functioning and able to channel excess water, the state government would also ensure that the water locks are always functioning and that the local authorities (PBT) did not neglect drain maintenance to prevent flooding, especially in risky areas such as Taman Sri Muda. On April 11, more than 1,000 victims were affected by floods around the Petaling and Klang districts with the Taman Sri Muda, Padang Jawa and Meru areas, Klang being the worst affected locations, causing more than 200 families to be relocated to six temporary evacuation centres (PPS). -- BERNAMA BERNAMA provides up-to-date authentic and comprehensive news and information which are disseminated via BERNAMA Wires; BERNAMA TV on Astro 502, unifi TV 631 and MYTV 121 channels and BERNAMA Radio on FM93.9 (Klang Valley), FM107.5 (Johor Bahru), FM107.9 (Kota Kinabalu) and FM100.9 (Kuching) frequencies. Nestle Malaysia Collaborates With KDEBWM To Expand SAVE Project In Selangor
SHAH ALAM, April 22 (Bernama) -- Nestlé Malaysia today expanded its Door-to-Door Collection and Recycling Project (SAVE project) in Selangor through the introduction of the SELKitar Programme. The programme, in collaboration with KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM), was launched to strengthen its commitment to addressing plastic waste, thus increasing the rate of household recycling throughout Selangor. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari witnessed the signing of the collaboration between Nestlé Malaysia chief executive officer Juan Aranols and KDEBWM managing director Datuk Ramli Mohd Tahir at the Shah Alam Convention Centre. Also present was state Public Health and Environment Committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin. Amirudin, in his speech, said the state government welcomed the implementation of environmental sustainability initiatives like the SELKitar Programme, which can raise awareness towards the environment in Selangor. He said the implementation of Act 672 in Selangor showed the state government's commitment to waste management practices that are uniform and sustainable, while the partnership reflected its belief that progress can only be achieved through sustained joint efforts. "This strategic collaboration is in tandem with the priorities outlined under Selangor's Budget 2025 to reduce waste in local municipalities and reduce reliance on landfills,' he said. Meanwhile, Juan Aranols said the SELKitar Programme represents a meaningful extension to their ongoing Project SAVE, which is a tangible demonstration of the company's commitment to tackling plastic waste and promoting the circular use of resources. He added that the continued expansion of the Door to Door Collection and Recycling Programme moved them closer to their vision of a Malaysia free of plastic waste, where post-consumer packaging is sustainably managed through effective collection systems.
