Tanger (SKT) Could Be a Great Choice
All investors love getting big returns from their portfolio, whether it's through stocks, bonds, ETFs, or other types of securities. But for income investors, generating consistent cash flow from each of your liquid investments is your primary focus. Cash flow can come from bond interest, interest from other types of investments, and of course, dividends. A dividend is the distribution of a company's earnings paid out to shareholders; it's often viewed by its dividend yield, a metric that measures a dividend as a percent of the current stock price. Many academic studies show that dividends make up large portions of long-term returns, and in many cases, dividend contributions surpass one-third of total returns. Tanger (SKT) is headquartered in Greensboro, and is in the Finance sector. The stock has seen a price change of -12.69% since the start of the year. Currently paying a dividend of $0.29 per share, the company has a dividend yield of 3.93%. In comparison, the REIT and Equity Trust - Retail industry's yield is 4.52%, while the S&P 500's yield is 1.57%. Looking at dividend growth, the company's current annualized dividend of $1.17 is up 7.8% from last year. In the past five-year period, Tanger has increased its dividend 4 times on a year-over-year basis for an average annual increase of 7.18%. Any future dividend growth will depend on both earnings growth and the company's payout ratio; a payout ratio is the proportion of a firm's annual earnings per share that it pays out as a dividend. Right now, Tanger's payout ratio is 51%, which means it paid out 51% of its trailing 12-month EPS as dividend. SKT is expecting earnings to expand this fiscal year as well. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2025 is $2.24 per share, representing a year-over-year earnings growth rate of 5.16%. Investors like dividends for a variety of different reasons, from tax advantages and decreasing overall portfolio risk to considerably improving stock investing profits. It's important to keep in mind that not all companies provide a quarterly payout. Big, established firms that have more secure profits are often seen as the best dividend options, but it's fairly uncommon to see high-growth businesses or tech start-ups offer their stockholders a dividend. Income investors have to be mindful of the fact that high-yielding stocks tend to struggle during periods of rising interest rates. With that in mind, SKT is a compelling investment opportunity. Not only is it a strong dividend play, but the stock currently sits at a Zacks Rank of 3 (Hold). Want the latest recommendations from Zacks Investment Research?
(arin@ [Exclusive] No agents' phones affected by SKT hack to date: NIS No mobile phones used by officials working in the government's major security departments have been affected by the SK Telecom hack so far, according to a National Intelligence Service document seen exclusively by The Korea Herald. In the document dated Thursday, the NIS said no official phones used at the five government departments and agencies -- the NIS, Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Science and ICT and the Presidential Security Service -- have suffered a data breach or other security incidents since the hack of the country's largest telecom provider first surfaced last month. Although no security incidents involving official phones have been detected to date, the NIS said it was monitoring for the possibility. According to the NIS, SK Telecom has been the sole manufacturer of official phones used by the South Korean government since April 2020. In the document, the spy service concluded that the security functions of the officials' phones should not, in principle, be affected by the SK Telecom hack. However, the NIS admitted that official phones, which have higher protection than normal phones, could be subject to universal subscriber identity module card duplications. To prevent possible security breaches, all of the official phones have been subscribed to SK Telecom's USIM protection services as of April 29, the NIS said. USIM cards on the official phones were also being replaced with new ones. The NIS said it was working closely with its counterparts in the US, UK and Singapore to investigate the perpetrators behind the telecom hack.

Who hacked S. Korea's largest telecom, and why? Growing concerns the SKT data breach wasn't just about money
Some suspect a sophisticated Chinese hacking group may be behind the attack, raising potential alarms over cyber security Nearly three years before South Korea's largest telecom provider knew anything was wrong, hackers had already broken into SK Telecom's internal systems. This detail emerged from a briefing this Monday by the government's public-private joint investigation team, which is probing one of the country's most serious cybersecurity breaches in recent memory. The attackers first embedded malware on June 15, 2022, according to the investigation. That software remained hidden until last month, when over 9 gigabytes of sensitive SIM-related data tied to approximately 25 million subscribers, including customers of SKT's budget MVNO carriers, was suddenly exfiltrated. Among the leaked data were 21 types of subscriber-related information, including identification numbers and SIM authentication credentials. What hasn't been confirmed, however, is whether call records or other highly sensitive personal communications data were taken. SK Telecom has said its call detail records (CDRs) are encrypted, but encryption alone may not be enough, warns Professor Kim Seung-joo of Korea University's Graduate School of Information Security. 'Even encrypted data is vulnerable if the keys aren't securely managed,' he said in a separate media interview on Tuesday. 'The same thing happened to nine US telecoms last year.' CDRs are highly valuable in state-backed cyber operations. Unlike credit card data, they reveal patterns of communication and movement, making them ideal for tracking public officials and institutions, he explained. The malware discovered on SK Telecom's servers included BPFdoor, a backdoor tool also used by Salt Typhoon, the Chinese-linked group behind the attacks on AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. South Korean investigators have not confirmed the attribution, but suspicion is growing. Professor Lim Jong-in, a cyber defense expert at Korea University, told local radio on Wednesday morning that he suspects the Chinese hacking group Red Mansion may be behind the intrusion. They are known for APT-style cyberattacks -- operations that are typically slow-moving, well-funded and thus conducted by nation-state actors rather than ordinary cybercriminals. APT stands for Advanced Persistent Threat. 'Their yearslong persistence and stealth tell you this wasn't just about stealing data for profit,' said Professor Yum Heung-yeol, another cybersecurity scholar at Soonchunhyang University, according to a local media report on Wednesday. 'To compromise a core telecom operator without any spies or insider cooperation is not something amateur hackers can do.' So far, no customers have reported cloned phones, suspicious charges or extortion attempts. That silence and the long-term nature of the breach, the experts have all said, makes financial motives unlikely. 'We are looking into multiple possibilities, including whether the attack was to steal data or to establish long-term access to deeper systems,' said Ryu Jae-myeong, director-general of network policy at the ICT Ministry involved in the joint investigation team.

SK Telecom scrambles to restore trust after massive data breach
Hit by 'worst-ever' hack, telecom giant loses 70,000 users in just two days South Korea's leading mobile carrier SK Telecom is facing mounting fallout from a recent hacking incident, with more than 70,000 users switching to rival providers in just two days after the company began offering free USIM card replacements. Amid growing concerns that the data breach could spill over into the financial sector, South Korean financial authorities on Wednesday launched an emergency response team and tightened security protocols. According to industry sources, 35,902 SK Telecom users switched to other major carriers Tuesday, following 34,132 users who switched Monday. During the same period, SKT gained only 11,991 new users. 'If we include those who moved to budget mobile carriers, the actual scale of the exodus is likely even higher,' an industry official said. Roughly 60 percent of users who left SKT migrated to KT, while most of the remaining subscribers switched to LG Uplus. SK Telecom CEO Ryu Young-sang acknowledged the severity of the cyberattack Wednesday, calling it 'the worst hacking incident in the history of the telecommunications industry,' during a parliamentary hearing held by the National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee. When Rep. Park Jeong-hun of the People Power Party asked whether the severity of the incident was due to a breach of a system once considered virtually impenetrable, Ryu admitted it was. He added that it will take at least three months to completely replace USIM cards for the company's roughly 25 million subscribers. 'I sincerely apologize once again for the recent cyber incident. Our initial response was lacking in many ways. We will do everything we can to restore trust and resolve the situation,' Ryu said. He noted that SKT's USIM Protection Service offers a comparable level of security and that both he and SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won are using the service without replacing their USIM cards. Regarding the possibility of additional data leaks beyond the three Home Subscriber Servers confirmed to have been breached, Ryu said further confirmation would depend on an ongoing joint investigation by government and private sector experts. Earlier in the day, the Financial Services Commission and the Financial Supervisory Service held a joint meeting with key financial infrastructure institutions and industry associations to coordinate risk prevention measures in response to the SKT data leak. According to the authorities, no signs of fraudulent activity had been detected so far. However, FSC Secretary-General Kwon Dae-young urged financial institutions to remain vigilant, warning that a spillover into financial systems could cause serious damage. 'We will operate a dedicated emergency response center and require financial institutions to report daily on any irregularities,' Kwon said. 'Special attention must be given to vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, to ensure no one is left exposed.' He also instructed key financial infrastructure providers to strengthen their cybersecurity protocols. The cyberattack — confirmed to have resulted in the leak of about 9.7 gigabytes of data after an SK Telecom server was infected with malware on April 18 — is delivering a significant blow to the telecom giant. While SKT still leads its competitors in subscriber numbers — with KT at 13.3 million and LG Uplus at 10.9 million — the company is expected to face major financial burdens, including regulatory fines and legal costs, as users prepare to file a class action lawsuit. Four SKT subscribers have already filed a lawsuit with the Seoul Central District Court, each seeking 10 million won ($7,300) in damages over the data breach. An online community organizing a class action lawsuit has amassed around 50,000 members. Shinhan Securities estimated that the cost of USIM card replacement alone could reach up to 200 billion won, based on an average replacement cost of 4,000 won per card for the entire subscriber base of 25 million.
