SLO County law enforcement head to Los Angeles amid protests
San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's deputies are headed to Los Angeles to support law enforcement's response to the ongoing protests against immigration enforcement.
According to a news release from the Sheriff's Office on Friday, a total of 23 deputies were sent to Los Angeles after a mutual aid request from the state Office of Emergency Services.
Another four officers were sent from the Arroyo Grande Police Department and two officers and a commander were sent from Grover Beach, the release said.
The SLO County responders are being sent for public safety purposes and to protect government buildings, the release said.
They will not be assisting with immigration enforcement.
'It is our hope that peace and calm is restored to Los Angeles, and our local law enforcement members are able to safely return to their homes,' the Sheriff's Office said.
The Grover Beach Police department also posted about the deployment on its Facebook page.
'It's important to note that this assignment is specific to public safety and keeping the peace,' the post read. 'California State Law prohibits local law enforcement from conducting immigration enforcement. We wish all of our SLO county agencies well as they help keep Los Angeles safe this weekend.'
