Search for missing San Mateo County hiker continues
(KRON) — The search for an elderly hiker with dementia who vanished in a mid-Peninsula wilderness area continued over the weekend. Margaret 'Elaine' McKinley, 79, was last seen on May 1 in the Windy Hill Open Space Preserve. This weekend's search involved over 100 specially trained search and rescue volunteers who canvassed the Windy Hill Open Space Preserve and surrounding areas. Search efforts focused around the area where McKinley was first reported missing. Search teams were deployed on foot and horseback with drones and specialized K9s also involved. Officials described the terrain as 'extremely dense and challenging,' with heavily brushed areas and poison oak as high as 15 feet. 'Unfortunately, despite these extensive and exhaustive efforts, no new information was gathered,' SMCSO said. San Jose fire captain's drug thefts left patients in pain: DA Since McKinley vanished 18 days ago, SMCSO and partner agencies have deployed over 600 specialized search and rescue volunteers to look for her. 'The Sheriff's Office extends its sincere appreciation to the incredible volunteers from across the region for their unwavering and selfless commitment to the search for Elaine,' officials said. Despite McKinley having been missing for more than two weeks now, officials with the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office maintain the search is still a rescue operation, and not a recovery. 'At this point, our search teams have not found evidence to support moving to a recovery operation, and our continuous search phase continues,' officials told KRON4. Sheriff's office officials said the current Limited Continuous Search phase will continue for the time being, but with scaled back resources. Anyone with information about McKinley's whereabouts is asked to contact the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office. Last week, in a separate incident. a camper who had been missing for three weeks in the Fresno County wilderness was 'miraculously' found alive. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Maryland Girl Scouts selling cookies given counterfeit cash, deputies investigating
CALIFORNIA, Md. ( — Deputies in Southern Maryland are searching for a suspect after someone swindled local Girl Scout troops out of cash, handing them counterfeit bills as they sold cookies. The Saint Mary's County Sheriff's Office (SMCSO) says it happened to two troops in California, Md. on Sunday. 'It's outrageous, and frankly, shame on you. These are Girl Scouts, out trying to earn funds for trips or trying to earn badges. They're enjoying an afternoon. They're so incredibly trusting. And this is a terrible thing to do,' said ALisa Casas with the SMCSO. Leaders from one of those troops say it's been tough for the girls to process. DC oversight hearing set to address bribery accusations at ONSE agency 'Audrianna has just been going around saying, 'I can't believe someone was so mean to do this to Girl Scouts,'' said mother Elisabeth Randazzo. Audrianna, 8, and 10-year-old Lena were selling cookies with their mothers Sunday when things took a turn. 'We needed some 1s, so I took four 20s and walked down to Giant to get some … It was the manager at Giant customer service who said two of these 20s are counterfeit. I was shocked and just surprised because I would never expect that to happen,' said mother and troop leader Lee Anne Machi. Around the same time about a block away, another troop selling cookies also fell victim to fake bills. Troop 10005 is raising money for a trip to Europe. For Girl Scouts Spencer Ewald, 11, and Molly Smith, 13, it's not their first cookie season, but it is their first time dealing with something like this. 'I don't know why someone would do that. Why would you make someone feel that way, just to get your money back? That's not very fair,' said Ewald. 'I just want to hug a dog': Wrongly convicted Maryland man welcomed home by rescue dog The girls are disappointed, but not discouraged. 'I think it's made me want to sell more cookies,' said Smith. 'We had this happen to us, and if it happens to you, you'll be OK too. You can keep going.' The Sheriff's Office says it's planning to hold a workshop for the Girl Scout troops this week to help them spot counterfeit cash in the future. Anyone with any information about the incidents is asked to give the SMSCO a call. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
