PBAPP Completes All Water Works In Penang, Begins Phased Restoration
BUTTERWORTH, April 27 (Bernama) -- All 23 water works projects in Penang, including the pipe connection for the Sungai Perai River Crossing Pipeline (SP-RCP) project that began at 10 pm on Friday, were fully completed at 1.48 pm today. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said water supply would be gradually restored to affected consumers soon. 'Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) teams are currently conducting system tests and pipe air-release processes before treated water from Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant can be fully distributed to users. 'We hope to achieve 88 per cent recovery rate, especially in Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS), and parts of Northeast and Southwest districts by tonight, with 100 per cent supply restoration by 10 am tomorrow (Monday),' he said. Chow was speaking to reporters after inspecting repair works at Kampung Teluk here today, accompanied by PBAPP chief executive officer Datuk K. Pathmanathan. On the connection of two 1.35-metre diameter pipes for the SP-RCP project, Chow acknowledged minor delays due to weather conditions. 'The contractor faced challenges as the works were located right by Sungai Prai, and the high tide phenomenon over the past two days complicated operations. However, works were finally completed this afternoon despite delays,' he said. Chow advised consumers who have regained supply to use water prudently to ensure smooth recovery, while urging patience for those still awaiting restoration. As of 11.30 am today, PBAPP reported that 162,000 affected accounts under the Scheduled Water Supply Interruption (SWSI) had been restored.

Water supply to 162,000 households in Penang restored as of 11.30am
GEORGE TOWN: Of the 341,708 households affected by the scheduled water supply interruption in the five districts in Penang, 162,000 of them have had their supply restored as of 11.30am today, with 100% restoration in the Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) area. The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) said supply to other areas had been restored up to 88% in Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT); 84% in Timur Laut; 38% in Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS); and 10% in Barat Daya within the same period. "This is the maximum level that could be reached for now because the contractor appointed for the Sungai Perai River Crossing Pipeline (SP-RCP) has not completed the work. As an emergency response, PBAPP has sent more pipe welders to Sungai Perai to expedite the project,' it posted on Facebook today, Bernama reported. The water supply disruption from April 25-28 involves over 341,000 households in five districts in Penang, with PBAPP advising consumers to store enough water to last between 24 and 60 hours. The disruption is due to the implementation of 23 projects, involving a total cost of RM25mil, aimed at improving water supply services for approximately 465,000 consumers served by the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (LRA). Penang previously experienced a 96-hour water supply disruption from Jan 10-14 last year, during which many areas were completely without water.
