Water Supply Fully Restored In Penang After Scheduled Disruption
GENERAL GEORGE TOWN, April 28 (Bernama) -- Water supply has been fully restored across all areas affected by the Scheduled Water Supply Interruption (SWSI) in Penang, with the final area receiving supply at 6.45 pm today. The last area to be restored was Gertak Sanggul in the Barat Daya district, involving 400 accounts in the end-of-line (EoL) section, delayed due to a longer-than-expected process of venting trapped air from the pipes. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow credited the success to the cooperation of all parties involved, highlighting the impact of the 23 projects carried out during the disruption. 'These projects enhanced the capacity of pumps and water distribution from the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (LRA), the largest and most vital facility in Penang,' he said in a statement today. Chow outlined several key benefits, including an increase in daily treated water supply for approximately 465,000 users across five districts. He also noted that the improvements strengthened water pressure, especially during high-demand periods such as dry and festive seasons. The initiative also tackled instability in the water supply for EoL and highland areas in Seberang Perai Selatan and Barat Daya districts, ensuring faster recovery after future disruptions. Additionally, the upgrades aim to reduce non-revenue water (NRW) by addressing major leaks promptly. Chow praised the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) staff and thanked everyone who contributed to the restoration efforts.

Penang taps flowing again after major water upgrades
GEORGE TOWN: Water supply across Penang has been fully restored, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said today. He said the 23 water-related projects carried out during the scheduled water supply interruption (SWSI) since Friday night had improved the pumping capacity and distribution of treated water from the Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant (WTP) — the largest and most critical WTP in the state. "The final areas to achieve full restoration, involving 400 accounts near Gertak Sanggul in the southwest district, received supply at 6.45pm today after delays caused by trapped air in the pipelines," he said in a statement. Chow said five main benefits were achieved through the SWSI: -Increased daily treated water supply from Sungai Dua WTP for 465,000 users across all five districts. -Improved water pressure, especially during high-demand periods. -Reduced unstable supply issues in End-of-Line and highland areas in Seberang Prai Selatan and the southwest district. -Faster recovery from future water disruptions. -Potential reduction of Non-Revenue Water (NRW) through major leak repairs. Chow thanked affected users for their patience and prayers, and praised the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP), state leadership, local councils, and assisting agencies for their cooperation. Earlier, it was reported that 99 per cent of affected users — 337,000 out of 341,708 accounts — had already had their water supply restored.

PBAPP Completes All Water Works In Penang, Begins Phased Restoration
BUTTERWORTH, April 27 (Bernama) -- All 23 water works projects in Penang, including the pipe connection for the Sungai Perai River Crossing Pipeline (SP-RCP) project that began at 10 pm on Friday, were fully completed at 1.48 pm today. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said water supply would be gradually restored to affected consumers soon. 'Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) teams are currently conducting system tests and pipe air-release processes before treated water from Sungai Dua Water Treatment Plant can be fully distributed to users. 'We hope to achieve 88 per cent recovery rate, especially in Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS), and parts of Northeast and Southwest districts by tonight, with 100 per cent supply restoration by 10 am tomorrow (Monday),' he said. Chow was speaking to reporters after inspecting repair works at Kampung Teluk here today, accompanied by PBAPP chief executive officer Datuk K. Pathmanathan. On the connection of two 1.35-metre diameter pipes for the SP-RCP project, Chow acknowledged minor delays due to weather conditions. 'The contractor faced challenges as the works were located right by Sungai Prai, and the high tide phenomenon over the past two days complicated operations. However, works were finally completed this afternoon despite delays,' he said. Chow advised consumers who have regained supply to use water prudently to ensure smooth recovery, while urging patience for those still awaiting restoration. As of 11.30 am today, PBAPP reported that 162,000 affected accounts under the Scheduled Water Supply Interruption (SWSI) had been restored.
