FIBA ​​U23 3x3 Nations League: Qatar runners-up in 5th stage

Tribune News Network Doha The national basketball team of Qatar finished second in the fifth stage of the FIBA U23 3x3 Nations League - Asia-Pacific. The tournament is being hosted by the Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) from May 28 to June 3, 2025, and includes top-tier international teams in both the men's and women's categories. A total of twelve teams are competing in the tournament, comprising six men's teams and six women's teams: Qatar (the host), New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Chinese Taipei. The Qatari national team advanced to the final of the fifth round after triumphing over the Philippines (22-18) and Indonesia (21-8) in the Group A games. In the final, the Qatari national team narrowly lost to New Zealand (17-18) in overtime following a 16-16 tie at the end of regulation time. The game was played on Monday evening, June 2, 2025, at the Etihad Hall in Al Gharafa. New Zealand reached the final defeating Chinese Taipei (21-7) and Singapore (21-9) in the Group B matches. The fifth round games were attended by QBF President Mohammed bin Saad Al Mughaiseeb, QBF Secretary-General Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari, along with members of the Board of Directors. The Qatar men's team comprises Hamad Yassin Ismail Musa, Zainuddin Badri, Nizar Mahmoud, Ahmed Saeed Mohammed, and Mubarak Jama. Jassim Ashkanani, Director of the Qatar National Basketball Team, crowned the New Zealand team as the champions of the fifth stage. In the women's competition, the Philippines national team took first place after defeating Chinese Taipei in the final match, 21-14, earning 460 points. Chinese Taipei came in second with 400 points. Talal Saad Al Maghseeb, tournament director, crowned the Philippines national team as the champion of the fifth round. The curtain falls on event with the sixth and final round.

MANAMA: The Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) has participated in the main session of the FIBA ​​Congress, hosted by Bahrain, with the participation of representatives from 180 national federations from across the world. President of QBF and Director General of the Organizing Committee of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027, Mohammed Saad Al Meghaiseeb, headed the QBF delegation, which also included Secretary General of the QBF Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari, and Director of Strategic Planning at the FIBA ​​World Cup Organizing Committee Fahad Jum. During the main session, President of the FIBA Sheikh Saud bin Ali Al Thani stressed the importance of the Congress as a strategic platform for shaping the future of the game globally, emphasizing the need to unify efforts to push basketball towards new horizons. For his part, FIBA ​​Secretary General Andreas Zagklis reviewed current challenges facing the game globally, pointing to future plans aimed at developing the game, empowering national federations, and expanding the reach of FIBA ​​around the world. The FIBA ​​Central Board reviewed reports on preparations for the 2026 Women's World Cup in Germany and the 2027 Men's World Cup in Qatar, and approved the bidding process for the next two World Cups. The bidding process for the 2030 Women's World Cup will begin in the third quarter of 2025, with the possibility of awarding the hosting rights as early as December 2025. The bidding process for the 2031 Men's World Cup will begin in the fourth quarter of this year, with the possibility of awarding the hosting rights as early as next year. Commenting on the event, President of QBF and Director General of the Organizing Committee of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027, Mohammed Saad Al Meghaiseeb considered this event an essential platform for exchanging expertise and strengthening cooperation between national basketball federations. He added that the Kingdom of Bahrain's hosting of this congress confirms its advanced position as a global sports destination and places Qatar in a leading position in preparation for the 2027 World Cup, as everyone strives to advance the development of the game in the region and enhance its presence in all sporting events. He emphasized that all delegations participating in the Congress commended Qatar's organization of the FIBA ​​Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 Qualifiers Draw, which took place a few days ago in Doha.

Organized by the Qatar Basketball Federation in cooperation with the Qatar Diar Company, and under the supervision of FIBA, the championship witnessed the participation of 16 international teams from world over. Mohammed bin Saad Al Mughaiseeb, President of the Qatar Basketball Federation, and Eng. Fahad Abdullatif Al Jahrami, Chief Development and Asset Management Officer of Qatari Diar, honoured the winners with the prizes. The closing ceremony was also attended by Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari, Secretary-General of QBF, and members of the Board of Directors of the Qatar Basketball Federation, and Captain Yassin Ismail, Director of the 3x3 Committee in QBF. The top three teams from the tournament have qualified for the next global round, which will be held in Amsterdam from May 17-18. Among the teams that participated in this version were teams from Europe, such as French Toulouse, Lehman and Partizan Serbian, Swiss Logano, Candafa Latvi, Lithuanian Condaian, and Spain. The list of teams also included clubs from the Americas such as Carolina (Puerto Rico) and New York Harlem (USA), as well as the Rwandan Kigali and Japanese Nichinomia from Asia and Africa. Participation was not limited to foreign teams. Five teams from the host country, Qatar, participated in the championship, namely: Al Wakrah, Al Rayyan, Al Gharafa, Al Khor and Doha. Al Maghaiseeb stressed that the tournament achieved an exceptional success at all levels, whether in terms of organization, public presence or strong competition between the teams. He said: 'We are proud of the high organizational and technical level in this championship, which is one of the stations that qualify for the global Masters rounds.' He pointed out that Qatar has become a prominent sports destination to host the major international championships in 3x3 basketball. 'We seize this occasion to invite the teams and the visiting masses to discover the tourist attractions in Qatar.' Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari, Secretary-General of QBF, expressed his appreciation for all the efforts made to make the championship a success, stressing that the tournament contributed to enhancing the experience of Qatar's teams. 'We continue to support this type of tournament because it provides a great opportunity to friction with the global teams, and enhance our players' technical experiences and give them the opportunity to develop,' he said. For his part, Eng. Fahad Abdullatif Al Jahrami, Chief Development and Asset Management Officer of Qatari Diar, expressed his thanks to the Qatar Basketball Federation for the distinguished organization of the tournament, stressing that hosting the championship in the Lusail region is an important step towards making it a global sports center.
