2 crore to be allocated from DPDC funds to tackle pollution in Solapur's Siddheshwar lake: District collector

1 2 Kolhapur: The Solapur district collector has stated that Rs1.5-2 crore will be allocated from the District Planning Development Committees (DPDC) funds to control pollution in Siddheshwar lake, almost two weeks after a host of dead fish and softshell turtles were found floating on the waterbody near the famous Siddheshwar temple in Solapur city. The district administration stated that the fish and turtles died as pH levels in the water decreased due to pollution. However, to now improve purity and quality of the lake water, the public works department (PWD) should appoint an agency and submit an action plan and order to start work by June 15, Solapur district collector Kumar Ashirwad instructed. A review meeting was organised at the collectorate regarding the Siddheshwar Lake pollution issue on Wednesday. Solapur Municipal Corporation (SMC) commissioner Sachin Ombase, additional commissioners Sandeep Karanje and Ravi Pawar, PWD executive engineer Manoj Thackeray, city engineer Sarika Ankulwar, public engineer Venkatesh Chobe, district disaster management officer Shaktisagar Dhole, and others were present. Ashirwad stated, "PWD should appoint a private agency to increase purity of water in Siddheshwar Lake under tourism development initiatives. Purification should be done through irrigation treatment, and oxygen content should be increased so that there is no danger to fish, turtles, and other aquatic life. An action plan should be submitted for this, and work should start by June 15, 2025."
