The arrested duo kept a flap under the cash dispenser. Whenever any customer withdrew cash, the currency notes accumulated in that flap instead of the cash dispenser of the machine. The customers had to leave the kiosk without cash, but that amount was debited from their bank account.
The bank received complaints about this issue from their own customers, as well as from customers of other banks, who tried to withdraw money from that particular cash dispensing machine between March 31 and April 22 this year.
"The bank officials on April 22 checked the transactions of that machine during that period and found a difference of Rs35,800. When they checked the machine, they found a flap kept under the cash dispenser of the machine," Police sub-inspector Sachin Tarade of the Warje Malwadi police told TOI.
The officer said that the bank officials then kept watch on the kiosk, and on Wednesday night, they found two men entering the kiosk and placing a flap under the cash dispenser.
The bank officials rushed to the kiosk, locked the duo inside, and alerted the police. "We reached the spot and took the duo into custody. We recovered two flaps from the duo," the officer said.
Tarade said that the duo was identified as Santoshi Kumar Saroj (30) and Pradip Kumar Maurya (28), both from Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh. "We also recovered Rs9,000 from the duo, Tarade said. He said that during questioning, the duo revealed that they used to keep a flap made of acrylic-like material under the cash dispenser.

Whenever a bank customer withdrew cash from that machine, the cash accumulated into that flap. "The duo used to visit the kiosk after two or three days and collect the cash from that flap," he said.
Tarade said that the duo claimed they came to Pune to steal cash from the ATMs. They identified the kiosk with no guard at Warje. They were staying on footpaths near the Warje Malwadi area. "The duo has been remanded to police custody till Saturday, April 26.
Our investigations are ongoing," Tarade said.
