'Miss him a lot': Boy pleads for 'irreplaceable' stuffed panda lost in Arizona
Panda is Teddy Cuthbert's faithful travel companion. The stuffed panda, slightly ragged through nearly 40 years of life, goes everywhere with the 11-year-old boy. But Panda, who has been in the family for two generations, was lost on a recent trip to Arizona. Panda's loss has disheartened the entire family — his parents, triplet brothers and older brother. "Really, really, really sad," Teddy said about missing his cherished, cuddly friend. "I miss him a lot." The boys' mom and Panda's original owner, Christie Cuthbert, 43, described Panda as "a very, very loved lovie." The last time Panda was seen on surveillance footage was just before sunrise April 6 as Teddy gripped on to the bear while the family left their room at Great Wolf Lodge Water Park in Scottsdale. A day after flying back to their Northern California home, the family realized Panda was missing. The boy was heartbroken when he realized the stuffed bear was potentially forever lost and cried incessantly for a full day. "Teddy's that kid who doesn't want to grow up. He loves the joy of being a kid so much," said Cuthbert, who got the stuffed panda when she was 5 years old. "That's kind of fueling a bit of his emotion too. That to him, Panda represents childhood, right? And so, losing that, it's kind of symbolic for him a little bit." The search and rescue operation, including family friends in the airline industry and in Arizona, has turned up zero leads. No lost and found that has been reached is harboring Panda it turns out. Cuthbert said the likely site where Panda went missing is Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport where the family took a 7:30 p.m. April 6 Southwest Airlines flight out of Gate D5 after a quick stop at La Grande Orange eatery in Terminal 4. The family landed at Sacramento International Airport where they picked up their luggage and drove home in their vehicle. The stuffed panda sports a black cap with the San Francisco Giants famed interlocked orange "SF" logo and wears a long-sleeved blue sailor's shirt with red trim. Anyone with information on the panda's whereabouts is asked to reach Cuthbert via He's "had a nose job. Our dog ripped off its original nose, and so my mom sewed on a new nose," Cuthbert said. "Anybody who would see a teddy bear left behind somewhere would just immediately turn it into somebody. It's not like an iPhone or iPad. It's not something somebody would want." Except for Teddy, who is still saddened by the loss of the family heirloom. Family friends have suggested stuffed bears found online that are similar to Panda, but Teddy has shunned the idea. "He's a tattered little bear, but he's irreplaceable at the same time," Cuthbert said. Gov. Newsom encourages Canadians to visit California in new tourism campaign
SACRAMENTO — Governor Gavin Newsom launched a new campaign welcoming and encouraging Canadians to come to California for vacations after new statistics show a sudden drop in Canadian tourism in the Golden State. Newsom reports that Canadian tourism statewide is down 12% compared to a year ago. In a new social media campaign, the governor is asking the nation's neighbors from the north to reconsider visiting California. "The Golden State and Canada have always shared so much in common. Sure, you-know-who is trying to stir things up back in DC, but don't let that ruin your beach plans," Newsom said in a video posted to social media . "California, it's the ultimate playground — 2,000 miles from Washington and a world away in mindset." Thomas Panos runs Omega Travel Service out of Vancouver. He said his clients don't want to vacation in California. "What has happened over the course of the past three months is something that I've never seen before," Panos said. He said Newsom's new tourism campaign holds "zero" weight. "The unfortunate reality is Governor Gavin Newsom has no ability to change what is going on in Washington, and that is where the problem lies," he said. Panos said Canadian tourism to the U.S. will get worse before it gets better, pointing to the recent tariffs and political posturing by the Trump administration as factors in the changing relationship between the two countries. Canadians are looking to Mexico, Europe and Asia as alternatives for vacations, he added. Sacramento International Airport has one daily flight from Vancouver. On Tuesday, it delivered Vancouver's Susan Clavey to visit with her daughter. Clavey traveled to the U.S. despite a dramatic shift in relations between the two countries that has her friends boycotting the country. "Nobody wants to talk about it," Clavey said. Her daughter, Leslie Clavey, was at the arrival gate to pick her Mom up. "Her other daughter lives in Canada and will not come, absolutely will not come," Leslie Clavey said.

Sacramento International Airport getting $2 million worth of new art projects as part of renovation
SACRAMENTO — Passengers flying in and out of Sacramento International Airport (SMF) may soon do a double-take thinking they actually booked a trip to outer space. A new walkway is being built at Terminal B that will make it look like people are strolling along the surface of the moon. "For some reason, the moon just seemed like an interesting idea," said artist John Roloff. Roloff is creating the three-dimensional walk-through sculpture called "Blue Moon." "The walls would have artwork on it that's taken from a NASA photograph of the entire surface of the moon," he said. "And there's also a floor component that has terrazzo that will have inclusions that are essentially slices of meteorites and then there's this blue light coming in flooding the space. It seemed like something that would be beautiful." It's part of a $2 million investment in new public art at the airport which also includes a design featuring thousands of glass forms that mimic a flock of flying birds. Another sculpture simulates the flight path of 12 giant metal migratory birds. "This pedestrian walkway is more than just a walkway," said Sacramento County Supervisor Patrick Kennedy. "It's really a view into the future." SMF is known for its iconic public artwork which also includes a 56-foot-tall red rabbit and two baggage carts stacked to the ceiling with luggage. The new art is part of a $1.4-billion expansion and renovation project which also includes a new parking garage and more airplane gates. Roloff and the other artists are now in the design phase with installation scheduled to be completed by next spring. "We're trying to make something special," he said.

Russell Square and Jackson Square Properties begin Delta Shores construction
Real-estate developers Russell Square and Jackson Square Properties have commenced the construction of Delta Shores, a new multifamily housing development in Sacramento, California, US. The development, which will include 576 units, is located near Interstate 5 and the Delta Shores retail centre, offering future residents access to shopping, dining, and entertainment amenities and regional connectivity. The project's construction began last month and is expected to reach completion by late 2026. Spanning 900,000ft², the Delta Shores development will house 21 residential buildings of three to four storeys, designed in a transitional contemporary style. Its design will include pitched roofs, complemented by flat-roofed bays with a ceramic tile finish. The project will also include two clubhouses, all reflecting the same modern aesthetic. Among the site's planned facilities are a resort-style pool, a fitness centre, a dog park, bike storage, and a golf simulator. Russell Square vice-president Andrew Schuurs said: 'Delta Shores is a natural fit for our approach - building thoughtfully designed communities in areas primed for long-term demand. 'We're bringing high-quality rental housing to a location that balances convenience, amenities, and accessibility.' Delta Shores is part of a larger master-planned community that stretches across 800 acres and will accommodate more than 4,900 residential units alongside 1.3 million square feet of retail space. Serving as the general contractor, Russell Square is set to deliver this integrated community within California's multifamily sector. In July 2024, Sacramento International Airport awarded a $30m contract to Parsons and Vanir for construction management and inspection services under its SMForward programme. The five-year contract was granted by the Sacramento County Department of Airports.
