Police chief: Student brought ammunition to Perry Local Schools building

PERRY TWP. ‒ A student brought a gun magazine with ammunition to Southway Elementary School on Wednesday and allegedly made a verbal statement implying they had a firearm in their backpack, police said. "We want to assure the community that no firearm was found, and at no point was there a weapon present on school grounds," Police Chief Bryan D. Taylor said in a prepared statement. "This situation was promptly reported by students to school staff, who immediately enacted safety protocols," he said."Our officers responded without delay and continue to work closely with Perry Local Schools as part of ourinvestigation. We commend the quick thinking and responsible actions of the students who came forward, aswell as the staff who acted decisively to secure the building." A police statement contained no additional information about the student, including their age. Southway is located on Southway Street SW. He said Perry Local Schools maintains a zero-tolerance policy concerning weapons and weapon-related items oncampus, and all violations are addressed in accordance with district policies and applicable law. Taylor encouraged families and students to report any suspicious behavior or threats through the SaferOH TipLine by calling or texting 844-SAFEROH. This resource, available at all times, protects the anonymity ofthose who make reports. Concerns can also be reported directly to the Perry Township Police Department at330-478-5121. "We understand that incidents like this may cause concern, and we want to reassure you that the safety ofour children and educators is our top priority," Taylor said. "Thank you for your continued support and vigilance in helping us keep our schools and community safe. New Perry elementaries wow parents: 'I don't think a child will be left behind in this school.'
