Stubborn Stellenbosch frustrate Zamalek in Confederation Cup Quarterfinal - Egyptian Football

Zamalek was left frustrated in South Africa after Stellenbosch held them to a 0-0 draw in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal on Wednesday. The Egyptian giants controlled much of the possession but failed to find the cutting edge needed to break down a resolute Stellenbosch defense. Zamalek created their best opportunity late in the second half when substitute Nasser Mansi saw his close-range header tipped onto the post by goalkeeper Sage Lottering in the 86th minute. The rebound was cleared as Stellenbosch narrowly escaped what would have been a heartbreaking concession. The first half was a measured affair, with Zamalek setting the tempo early. Seifeddine Jaziri and Mostafa Shalaby tested the South African backline with a few half chances. Keeper Mohamed Awaad had little to do in the opening 45 minutes but remained alert, especially during a dangerous cross from Ashley Cupido and a near-post header by Andre de Jong in the 72nd minute. Both sides made key substitutions in the second half to influence the contest. Stellenbosch's Ibraheem Olalekan and Sanele Barns came on to inject pace, while Zamalek introduced Mahmoud Gehad and Nasser Mansi in search of a breakthrough. Despite their late surge and attacking intent, Zamalek couldn't convert their dominance into goals. Stellenbosch, meanwhile, showed tactical discipline and will be satisfied with the result, taking a clean sheet back to Cairo for the second leg. Zamalek will now look to capitalize on their home advantage in the return leg in Cairo on 9 April. The winner will face the victor of the Masry-Simba clash in the semifinals.
