In a candid interview on The Stage Steele Show, Patrick described their breakup as the most agonizing experience of her life—one rooted in emotional abuse, self-doubt, and personal transformation. 'Everything was torn to bits': Danica gets honest about Rodgers Danica Patrick's public persona has always been defined by strength, but in her recent interview, she peeled back the curtain on a chapter of her life that nearly broke her. Speaking openly, she recalled her 2020 breakup with Aaron Rodgers as not just emotionally taxing—but utterly shattering. ' It felt like it was my life,' Patrick confessed, painting a picture of a relationship so interwoven into her daily existence that the separation felt like losing her identity. The former NASCAR driver described the collapse of what she thought was a lasting partnership, shared routines, a shared home, even shared appointments, disintegrating overnight. But what stunned fans most was her blunt characterization of the relationship as emotionally abusive. 'And because the nature of the relationship was emotionally abusive. So that wore me down to nothing,' she said. ''People could never imagine that I would lack complete confidence, or belief in the simple things about who I am. Like yea, everything was torn to bits.' She went on to say that Rodgers 'leaves a trail of blood,' alluding to a history of emotional fallout in his past relationships. Danica Patrick | The Sage Steele Show Patrick's revelations add a new layer to the public's perception of Rodgers, whose personal life has often been under scrutiny. While she didn't detail specific moments of abuse, her overall reflection suggests a toxic dynamic that slowly eroded her self-worth. Still, amid the pain, Patrick found growth. 'It gave me the greatest gift, which was myself,' she said. The heartbreak became a turning point, a lesson in self-reliance and emotional healing. For the race car driver, the end of that relationship was a gift that offered a new opportunity. "It gave me the greatest gift, the greatest gift, which was myself," Patrick said. "You know it gave me the greatest gift of how much I needed to show up for myself and take care of myself." Steele asked if those feelings had existed at the moment or if they were a result of hindsight. Patrick pointed out that it's her nature to try and make things work while doing the hard things. "I just say I'm built for hard things," Patrick said about initially wanting to make it work and not give up. "I can handle hard things. I just saw it as a hard thing. My nature is to try harder and do more." She continued, saying there is no shame or regret on her end, adding it's all part of the path and learning the lessons in becoming who you are. Patrick isn't the first person to come forward about relationship difficulties with Rodgers. Shailene Woodley, an actress who was previously engaged to the quarterback, detailed her time with Rodgers in an interview with Outside Magazine in 2024. Woodley called the relationship a "toxic situation," saying that it felt like she lost her soul, self, happiness and joy. "I haven't shared much about my relationship with Aaron because it always makes me cry," Woodley told the magazine. "It was not right. But it was beautiful." MORE: Terry Bradshaw slams Steelers, Aaron Rodgers for quarterback situation While Rodgers has cited personal reasons for his decision to remain a free agent at the moment, training camp is fast approaching. The quarterback is still without a team, even though it's believed the Pittsburgh Steelers will be his eventual destination. However, in this relationship, it's the Steelers that would be signing up for everything that comes with it. Time will tell whether their courtship of Rodgers ends better than it has for others.

"It has some extra constraints because you have other opinions about your relationship, how it affects your work and, you know, just some inappropriate connections… There's some horrible media outlets that… you say something or do something, where there's a story, and they just go with it and run with it." The couple then confirmed their breakup in July 2020. Patrick later opened up on the breakup during an appearance on National Geographic's " Running Wild with Bear Grylls " and told the survivalist that she learned a ton about herself during the public breakup. "I think we learn the most about ourselves through relationships, but there's nothing like heartbreak to really throw you in the deep end of that," Patrick said, according to Yahoo! Entertainment . "But I've learned a lot and as broken open as I was on the sad end, I have felt so much joy in so many more instances and so many more unlikely places than I ever have, so it's like my heart got broken open to both ends of the spectrum."
