Telangana leads in Wi-Fi usage, reveals national survey
Hyderabad: Telangana and Kerala have emerged as national leaders in mobile Wi-Fi usage, according to the Union ministry of statistics and programme implementation's 'Comprehensive Modular Survey – Telecom 2025.
' The report highlights that among individuals aged 15 and above, urban Telangana ranks highest with a Wi-Fi usage rate of 20.5%, followed closely by Kerala at 19.6%.
Across the overall population aged 15 and above, Kerala leads with a Wi-Fi usage rate of 15.6%, followed by Telangana at 11%. Apart from these two, no other major states — excluding those in the Northeast — cross the 10% mark. Maharashtra and Delhi follow with around 8.5%.
'These figures reflect Telangana's robust digital infrastructure and a population eager to adopt technology,' said T Ravi Kiran, commissioner of electronic service delivery department of Telangana.
Tech experts link these statistics to broader economic trends. 'Wi-Fi is key to bridging the digital divide and enabling affordable access to technology,' explained Sai Krishna Mamidala, a tech expert associated with a WEF-linked think tank.
'Though the data covers just the last three months, it aligns with the broader connectivity trend.'
The World Economic Forum (WEF) estimates Wi-Fi could contribute up to $5 trillion to the global economy by 2025. Improving internet connectivity, especially in schools, is tied to higher GDP per capita and better living standards in developing nations.
Despite progress, the survey also shows that rural access remains alarmingly low, with usage below 1% across male, female, urban, and rural categories in most states. Experts stress that expanding Wi-Fi, particularly in underserved areas, is vital for inclusive growth and digital empowerment.
