Patisserie Valerie is a British café and bakery chain dating back to 1926, famous for its handcrafted cakes, pastries and continental-style desserts. The cake slices - once sold at 400 Sainsbury's locations – promised to bring high street café luxury to supermarket shelves. The company was bought by Irish private equity firm Causeway Capital Partners in 2019 after it faced financial difficulties. Patisserie Valerie now runs standalone cafés and delivers cakes across the UK through its online service. It is unclear why Sainsbury's decided to ditch the range. No official statement has been made by Patisserie Valerie. It comes as Sainsbury's is rolling out major changes in stores, aimed at streamlining the shopping experience – including upgrades to its SmartShop system. SmartShop allows customers to scan products as they go through stores via a physical handset or app on their phone. But now, the supermarket is trialling brand-new handsets at two locations – Richmond, London, and Kempston, Bedfordshire – that allow users to pay directly on the device by tapping their card, removing the need to queue at all. SAVE AT SAINSBURY'S Once payment is complete, customers can either print a receipt at a designated bay or choose to have one emailed. Darren Sinclair, director of future stores and customer experience at Sainsbury's, said the trial was launched in response to customer feedback, with many shoppers preferring to use a physical handset to save phone battery. Sinclair told The Grocer: "I think about this as trying to reduce friction, improve payment and simplify the shopping journey, as well as the future potential space." He added that wider adoption of SmartShop helps the supermarket better understand customer behaviour. "From a heatmapping perspective we can see how people shop. "We don't see the physical customer, just see the heat, so we can see which ends are looked at, which screens are looked at and the flow around the store."

The 50p trick to make sure your clothes come out sparkling every time & it will add extra life to your washing machine

A CLEANING fan has shared a clever 50p trick that guarantees sparkling clothes and helps extend the life of your washing machine. Becs, 27, took to TikTok to post a step-by-step guide demonstrating her thorough cleaning hack. 3 This trick will not only ensure fresh laundry but also prevents unpleasant odours and mould from building up in your washing machine. Known as ' cleanwithbecs ' on TikTok, she shared a series of pictures detailing each stage of her cleaning routine, starting with the filter. Becs begins by removing the filter, using puppy pads to soak up any leaking water. She then scrubs it clean with a toothbrush and washing-up liquid. Next, she tackles the drum, using a dusting glove to remove dirt and hair. She follows up with a toothbrush, white vinegar - which currently costs 35p from Sainbury's - and mould spray to scrub the drum thoroughly. Once clean, she gives it another scrub with washing-up liquid before moving on to the washing machine door, cleaning both the inside and outside. The detergent tray is her next focus, which she cleans and scrubs using white vinegar or mould remover, depending on the level of build-up. To finish, Becs adds bicarbonate of soda directly into the drum and runs a hot cycle. This helps eliminate lingering musty smells and cleans any hard-to-reach areas. 'I know white vinegar and bicarbonate of soda neutralise, but they're used in separate areas for separate purposes before they mix and neutralise in the drum.' Mixing vinegar and baking soda causes an immediate chemical reaction forming it to fizz up. With this simple yet effective cleaning method, Becs ensures her washing machine stays in top condition, leaving clothes fresh and vibrant every time. 3 3 Since sharing her video in February, Becs has gained 228.9K views with 119 people rushing to the comments section to share their thoughts. One suggested: " Dishwasher tablet on 90. it cleans pipes. You'll be surprised what comes out." A second added: "I never thought of using the puppy pads when I clean the filter, so much better than mopping up water." To which Becs replied: "Saved me so many times! "It's that awkward height for me where anything I have that fits underneath isn't big enough." And Becs replied: "No need to unplug."
