Three IKBN students killed in crash with MPV in Kedah
ALOR STAR: Three National Youth Skills Institute (IKBN) students were killed after their motorcycles crashed into a multi-purpose vehicle at Km49.4 of the North-South Expressway near here this afternoon.
Kota Setar district police chief Assistant Commissioner Siti Nor Salawati Saad said police were alerted to the crash at about 2.10pm.
"Initial investigations showed that the incident involved a Naza Citra and two motorcycles – a Yamaha 135LC and a Yamaha Y16ZR.
"It is believed that the crash occurred when the rider of the Yamaha 135LC lost control and rear-ended a stationary Naza Citra, which was parked on the emergency lane.
"A second motorcycle, a Yamaha Y16ZR, which was coming from behind, failed to stop in time and collided into the first motorcycle," she said in a statement.
Salawaty said two riders and a pillion rider, all aged 19, were killed on the spot, while another pillion rider was rushed to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) for treatment in the yellow zone.
The car's driver and three passengers escaped unhurt.
The bodies were sent to the HSB's Forensic Department for post-mortem.
Salawaty said police have detained the driver to assist in the investigations into the accident.
Police are investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
