Sainsbury's shoppers 'gutted' after supermarket axes popular dessert from stores

The major supermarket chain has recently confirmed that it no longer sells Patisserie Valerie cake slices in its stores. The news came after one shopper took to the social media platformn X - formerlly Twitter - to ask where they had gone. ‌ In response to the shopper, the supermarket's social media team wrote: "Unfortunately, this range has been discontinued.' Another shopper also discovered the axing recent sharing that they were "gutted". They wrote: "Oh no! The Patisserie Valerie counter in Sainsbury's has gone! #gutted". ‌ Starting back in 1926, Patisserie Valerie is a British café and bakery chain which sells handcrafted cakes, pastries and continental-style desserts. The deal between the two chains started up back in 2020, which saw the cake slices sold at the supermarkets' 400 in-store bakery counters. According to the release at the time, the selection sold consisted of Patisserie Valerie's 14 top-selling products, including the Salted Caramel & Chocolate Bombe, Strawberry Gateau and Baked Cheesecake Slice, alongside celebration cakes such as the Triple Chocolate Delight. When the partnership was announced, Patisserie Valerie CEO James Fleming said it would bring high street café luxury to supermarket shelves. Sainsbury's has not confirmed the reason for the change, and no official statement has been made by Patisserie Valerie. Patisserie Valerie currently runs standalone cafés and delivers cakes across the UK through its online service. The trial is currently being conducted in two of its stores in Richmond and in Kempton. The supermarket chain has made its scan and shop service check out free meaning customers do not need to visit the traditional checkout area. Customers simply need to tap their card on the device to pay, before printing or emailing themselves the receipt. Shoppers can then return the handset to the designated SmartShop ports and leave. Sainsbury's shoppers have been able to pay for their shop using the supermarket's SmartShop app on their phones since 2022. However the change comes as Sainsbury's research found that customers preferred using the physical handset to their phone.
