Denny's is the latest restaurant to add egg surcharge at some locations

As the cost of eggs continues to rise, nationwide restaurant chain Denny's, known for its all-day breakfast offerings, is the latest to add an egg surcharge in some markets. The Spartanburg, South Carolina-based chain is implementing a temporary egg price increase on a market-by-market basis. According to a Denny's statement, the need for a temporary surcharge on every meal that includes eggs at some locations is due to egg shortages and the increased cost of eggs. With items such as eggs, Denny's says they try to 'minimize the impact market volatility has on our costs and menu pricing' while remaining committed to providing value. 'We understand our guests' desire for value, and we will continue to look for ways to provide options on our menu, including our $2 $4 $6 $8 value menu, while navigating these rapidly changing market dynamics responsibly,' according to a statement provided to the Free Press. Denny's said they are not providing specific locations or markets that are adding egg surcharges. According to Denny's website, Michigan has a dozen locations. A location in Taylor on Eureka Road, the only one in metro Detroit, says they have not added an egg surcharge. Denny's has nearly 1,500 restaurants, with most franchised, throughout the U.S. and around the globe. Locally, popular Sister Pie in Detroit's West Village in a Tuesday Facebook post and on its website said that with rising egg prices they are implementing an increase on select pies. Sister Pie cited in the post that it 'takes a lotta eggs to bake the Salted Maple pie, and all of our chess-style pies!' According to the post, the price increase is 'hopefully temporary.' On Sister Pie's website, a whole 9-inch Salted Maple pie is $40, and slices are $5.32. Earlier in February, nationwide chain Waffle House shell-shocked the restaurant industry announcing its egg dishes will have a 50-cent per egg surcharge because of soaring egg prices and shortages. According to its website, the nationwide chain known for its waffles and crispy hash browns serves 272 million eggs at nearly 2,000 restaurant locations that are open daily around the clock. Waffle House has no Michigan locations – the closest looks to be an hour south of Detroit in Toledo, Ohio. When is Fat Tuesday? When Mardi Gras celebration takes place in Michigan in 2025 Egg prices have been skyrocketing in recent months with most of the blame on the ongoing outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza (HPAI) or bird flu. In the last 30 days, according to the USDA, 18.9 million birds have been infected with the virus. Also affecting supplies are new cage-free laws in states like Michigan that are now in place. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' most recent Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, egg prices increased more than 15% from December to January. Prices from the same time in January 2024, are up a whopping 53%, or the year. According to January's CPI report, a dozen eggs averaged nearly $5, up from $4.15 in December 2024.
