SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS)—Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux highlights a new initiative to boost local business growth, celebrate community events, and address updates on traffic enforcement. Salute the Badge: A candid conversation with SPD Chief Wayne Smith One of the most significant announcements was the launch of a new economic development website, a one-stop shop designed to facilitate the city's collaboration with entrepreneurs and small business owners. 'When we came into office, we wanted to simplify the process for people to do business in and with the city,' said Mayor Arceneaux. 'You can now find checklists, permit information, and applications online, without needing to visit Government Plaza.' The website is accessible from the city's homepage and includes resources tailored to new and existing business owners. 'Small businesses create most of the jobs in this country,' the mayor emphasized, 'so we want to encourage an entrepreneurial spirit right here in Shreveport.' Mayor Arceneaux also expressed his excitement about the upcoming Father's Day 5K, organized by community leader Alex T. Ray. The mayor will attend—'more walking than running,' he joked—and praised the event's focus on fatherhood and community unity. 'There's strong data that shows children who grow up with a father or father figure do better in life.' 'They'll be forever in the record books,' Arceneaux said proudly. Finally, he addressed Senate Bill 99, which limits the use of speed cameras to school zones. SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – The police chief discussed his team's efforts to reduce the city's crime rate. Chief Wayne Smith answered questions candidly to during a special, in-depth interview conducted at the newly announced substation site in Cedar Grove neighborhood. Chief Smith stated that under his administration, with the assistance of the city council and Mayor Tom Arceneaux, the city's violent crime rate is decreasing. He said the role of the substation will also help curb crime by creating a safe place for the community and allowing neighbors to get to know their local patrol officers in a friendly way. WASHINGTON, D.C. (KTAL/KMSS)—A familiar face seen during NBC 6's Salute the Badge segments was honored on Tuesday night by President Donald Trump during his address to Congress. 'Joining us at the gallery tonight is a young man who truly loves our police. His name is DJ Daniel. He is 13 years old, and he has always dreamed of becoming a police officer,' said President Trump as members of Congress clapped. DJ has been sworn in as an honorary member of more than 900 law enforcement agencies nationwide. Boy battling cancer sworn in as honorary police officer in Texarkana NBC 6 News was there when DJ was sworn in with the Mansfield Police Department and the Bossier Sheriff's Office in 2024. DJ is battling terminal brain and spine cancer. He admits he doesn't know how much time he has left. Last night, the President gave him the honor of a lifetime. 'I am asking our new Secret Service director, Sean Curran, to officially make you an agent of the United States Secret Service,' said Mr. Trump to a room of raucous cheers. Mr. Trump used DJ's story to highlight his administration's goal of reducing childhood cancers over the next four years. Salute the Badge 'DJ's doctors believed his cancer likely came from a chemical he was exposed to when he was younger. Since 1975, rates of child cancer have increased by more than 40%,' said Trump. SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – The Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office (CPSO) will open its doors for an upcoming open house. More Salute the Badge news CPSO's Explorer POST Program Open House is scheduled for Monday, January 27, 2025, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Sheriff's Safety Town. According to CPSO, a week from January 13 to January 21, the CPSO school resource officers (SRO) collaborated with faculty members at their assigned high schools to identify students interested in exploring careers in the criminal justice field as Explorers. 41 students from various Caddo Parish high schools met the qualifications to be invited to the upcoming Open House.
