British dad 'caught with cocaine in Dubai' jailed for 40 years in 'hellhole'

A British man allegedly caught with £2,000-worth of cocaine in Dubai has been sentenced to 40 years in jail, illustrating the severity of drug laws in the UAE. Sam Dorman, a barber and tattoo artist originally from Glossop, Derbyshire, was detained in a police operation earlier this month. The 33-year-old was said to be in possession of half a gram of the Class A drug when he was arrested. Another 28g of the substance are also understood to have been found at his home. The dad-of-one was sentenced on Monday and is now being held at Al-Awir Central Prison – a notorious 'hellhole', where other British nationals are also detained. A source told the Sun: 'He has a young daughter in the UK, so to be serving 40 years is really sad. He won't be out till he is in his 70s. 'The prison is a hellhole and Sam's family are understandably distraught. 'When they spoke to him, it looked like he had taken a battering. I just hope someone can help him.' The source added that after he moved to Dubai in 2022 to start a business, he 'got in with the wrong crowd'. They believe a customer, who Dorman had sold cocaine to, was detained by the police on the side of a road. They claimed officers then took his phone and messaged the tattoo artist, in a bid to pretend to be the buyer and asked for more. 'Sam stupidly went and the police were waiting,' they added. 'At this point he was nabbed.' In the UK, such an offence could carry seven years behind bars and/or an unlimited fine. In the Emirates, however, a zero-tolerance policy toward drug offences is enforced. Penalties are severe, with life imprisonment or death possible for trafficking. Even small amounts intended only for personal use can result in significant fines and deportation. Sam is currently locked up in Al-Awir Central Prison, on the outskirts of Dubai. It is one of the Emirate's main detention facilities. More Trending Known for its overcrowded conditions and strict regime, the jail has been the subject of criticism by human rights groups. Detainees have reported harsh living conditions, limited access to legal support, and poor hygiene standards. Several foreign nationals, including Britons, are serving long sentences there, often in connection with drug-related offences. More info A British father has been sentenced to 40 years in a notorious Dubai prison after he was allegedly caught with cocaine. Sam Dorman's relatives are reportedly "understandably distraught" after the tattoo artist received his sentence. The 33 year old was arrested earlier this month following a police operation, it is believed. Authorities are said to have found half a gram of cocaine on Dorman. Reports also suggest an additional 28g of the Class A drug was found at his residence. In the UK, the drugs would be valued at approximately £2,000, but their worth could triple in the United Arab Emirates due to higher street prices. Dubai is infamous for its strict anti-drug laws, reports the Mirror. Dorman, originally from Glossop, Derbyshire, is thought to have moved to Dubai in 2022 to set up a business venture. His family in Britain are now said to be deeply concerned for the well-being of the tattooist and barber following his conviction. It is reported Dorman will be incarcerated at Al-Awir Central Prison, known for its harsh conditions and severe treatment of inmates. This is the same prison where British teenager Marcus Fakana was held last year after being charged with having sex with a British girl while on holiday. A source close to Dorman and his family told The Sun : "He's got a young daughter in the UK, so to be serving 40 years is really sad. He won't be out till he's in his 70s. When they spoke to him, it looked like he'd taken a battering. I just hope someone can help him." The insider revealed that Dorman, a father of one, "got in with the wrong crowd" after relocating to the United Arab Emirates. They suspect that a customer, who had purchased drugs from Dorman, was caught by the police. The source alleges that the police then seized this individual's phone and messaged Dorman, pretending to be the buyer and requesting more. This reportedly led to Dorman's arrest and subsequent imprisonment on Monday, according to today's reports. The Mirror has reached out to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) for comment and additional information. However, the FCDO has informed The Sun: "We are supporting a British man detained in Dubai." This incident follows another case involving a Brit, Bella May Culley, who could face up to 20 years in a dreadful Georgian jail. The teenager, hailing from Billingham in County Durham, was arrested in Georgia earlier this week on suspicion of attempting to smuggle drugs into the country.
