Canton pool repairs in the final stretch after supply delays
Jun. 4—School is out, summer is heating up and the pool is calling. But if you're heading to Canton for pool activities, you've got a little longer to wait. Just how long isn't clear, however.
The Canton pool was swamped out by Helene flooding along the Pigeon, requiring a host of repairs to get it back in working order.
"Our goal is ASAP. There are a lot of uncertainties," said Sam Dunbar, Canton director of parks and recreation. "Everything should be placed in the pump house pretty soon. We're optimistic. We're trying hard, but there's some unknowns."
The biggest of those unknowns comes from the fact that the electrical work still needs to be finished — and that can come with its own set of hiccups.
"We haven't had power there for nine months now," Dunbar said.
The town has already faced delays in both the bid process and in trying to get the equipment it needed.
"It's been frustrating," Dunbar said. "No fault to the contractors whatsoever. They've been working diligently as soon as they get their equipment in. It sucks. It's been unfortunate and a little frustrating that everything has taken so long to get here."
First, it took some time to receive bids.
"We put out bids for all these things and didn't get any hits," Dunbar said.
Once the bids started coming in, the town faced the problem of getting the required equipment, including the pump for the pool.
"It's specialized equipment, and it's going to take a while to get here," Dunbar said.
Now that the equipment has arrived, it's down to construction and labor, he added. All that's left to finish is the locker room area, the fencing, the electrical work and replacing the pool pumps.
"All that is underway as we speak," Dunbar said.
