Espanyol vs Barcelona game stopped as car drives into fans outside stadium
A car ploughed into several individuals outside Espanyol's stadium ahead of their La Liga match against Barcelona on Thursday evening, with a distressing video of the incident circulating on social media during the game. Footage showed terrified bystanders fleeing as police officers approached the vehicle. The incident, which took place just before the match started, led to a brief interruption in the Spanish top-tier game. However, play quickly resumed once it was confirmed that no one had sustained serious injuries. Mundo Deportivo reported that the incident happened shortly before the game began, prompting multiple ambulances to rush to the scene. The same report further clarified that according to Catalan police, the incident was accidental and occurred when a female driver lost control of her car, reports the Mirror. It is believed that thirteen people suffered minor injuries. ITV commentator Sam Matterface reassured viewers during the game's coverage that there were no severe injuries. Referee Cesar Soto Grado was seen conversing with police and officials near the pitch's edge during the short break in play, which followed an announcement over the public address system. Hansi Flick's team could clinch the championship title with a win, following Real Madrid's dramatic comeback just a day earlier that kept them from securing the Spanish title. At half-time, both teams were evenly matched with a scoreline of 0-0. Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email.
