Adam Crimmins saves Down from Louth comeback at the death in Newry

All-Ireland SFC: Down 0-25 Louth 0-24 Adam Crimmins's last-gasp block will live long in the memory of those who witnessed Down's nail-biting derby win over Louth . With the hooter already sounded and just a single point separating the sides, Louth midfielder Tommy Durnin looked to have rescued a draw only to be spectacularly denied by Crimmins's two palms. Finn Murdock booted the ball out on the full and cue the roar that relieved the tension-filled 70 minutes deserved. Credit to Louth, who came from as far back as 11 points to boil it down to one final play, but they will wonder where that energy was in the first half. READ MORE Odhrán Murdock set the tone from the off, while Louth were once again ponderous in attack and had to rely on a ninth-minute free from captain Sam Mulroy to get off the mark. That score, stemming from a rare Down infringement, was the only blemish on the hosts' scorching opening. With 15 minutes played in the first half, Down were in full flow and Louth were floundering. Photograph: Ryan Byrne/Inpho Conor Laverty's men stormed into a commanding 0-11 to 0-1 lead, a quiet Pat Havern only opening his account that late into proceedings. Danny Magill was excellent, that was the form Down were in. Hitting Louth on the break, the home crowd humming, Down were finding their groove with ease. Ryan Burns did hand Louth a lifeline and what was to come with three first-half points to make 0-16 to 0-7 at the much-needed interval. With the challenge presented, Louth had to change tact. More direct play and greater bravery in shooting from beyond the arc stirred them to life. Mulroy had a huge second half, four orange flags that took a chunk out of what most felt was an insurmountable lead. However, Magill was on hand to coral Louth's hopes with scores, and wides even, to halt their momentum somewhat but the surge was to come. Three two-pointers in a row from Mulroy, Craig Lennon, and Durnin had the home side rattled. With 10 to play, the FRC were rubbing their hands with glee, this one-sided contest became dashing. You could not look away as Louth continued to come with long range shots. Excitement personified. One final twist was to come, just when it looked like a dramatic draw was on the cards, Crimmins delivered the block of the season to preserve Down's unbeaten start. Can Louth get back into the game in Newry? 38 minutes ago In the Tailteann Cup this evening, Offaly hold a narrow lead over Laois and Waterford are beating Wicklow. Both of those games are at half-time. Earlier in the day, Limerick booked their place in the quarter-finals. Read the match report below. A brilliant double save from Shane Ryan and then a fantastic block from Brian Ó Beaglaoich keeps Mark Cronin at bay three times. Had that been scored, Cork might have sensed a comeback was on the cards in front of a home crowd. From the subsequent 65, Derry sent goalkeeper Sean Kelly forward and he had an effort blocked down. High drama with Derry chasing only a goal to force extra-time but they couldn't fin it. It would be unkind to begrudge London the victory after that performance. 13 hours after their last victory in this competition, they've repeated the trick. Cormac O'Doherty hit nine points, eight from frees, with his consistency and accuracy from the boot proving crucial in the end. 59 minutes ago Christy Ring Cup final 70' Derry 1-24 London 1-25 Almost over at Croker and Derry trail by one. Unanswered scores by Ryan McGill, Richie Mullen, Ruairi O'Mianain and Eamonn Conway have given them a glimmer of hope. In the last few minutes, Tony Brosnan and Tom O'Sullivan have added two-pointers - bringing the team's tally to six in the match. The hooter is followed soon by the whistle and Cork's championship woes go on. Kerry beat their great rivals again. Today 01:25 PM All-Ireland Senior Football Championship HALF TIME - Down 0-16 Louth 0-7 Derry have racked up a very sizeable 16 points in the first half against Louth - including two two-point scores. Louth have been a second half team for the most part this year but Ger Brennan will need a orchestrate a major turnaround to get back into contention at Pairc Esler. Ryan Burns' point on the whistle keeping them in it, just. Today 01:21 PM Christy Ring Cup final 60' Derry 1-20 London 1-23 London continue to lead Derry in the Christy Ring Cup final but it remains a one-score game. Too close to call at this stage. Derry have lost this game four times in the last decade and they need to find something soon to end that dire record. 2012 champions London are 10 minutes from another success. Today 01:19 PM All-Ireland Senior Football Championship 64' - Cork 0-18 Kerry 1-23 Such drama! Mark Cronin fails to beat Shane Ryan with a penalty as the goalkeeper dives to his left to help it onto the post. Then he saves again from Cronin and a third effort from the full-forward is blocked. Amazing. Cork fail to reduce the arrears as the clock ticks down. And Kerry - still - having conceded a goal in this year's Championship. Live Blog Software

Stung Monaghan take out their frustrations on off-key Louth

All-Ireland SFC Group 4: Louth 4-08 Monaghan 1-23 Fired-up Monaghan put Louth to the sword in Newbridge with a resounding opening Group 4 victory over their successful neighbours. A result and scoreline that might make people take notice nationally could have been more only for Louth's gritty knack at getting goals. While Louth spent the past few weeks lifting silverware and charming the nation, neighbours Monaghan were brooding. Their April defeat to Donegal leaving a sting that hadn't quite faded. The fact that Jim McGuinness' men went on to seize the Anglo Celt only deepened Monaghan's hunger and fastened people's thoughts on the Farney men being Sam Maguire contenders. From the outset, Louth, like the league contest in Drogheda, were hit with the full force of that fury. Already overawed, being forced into changes down the centre of their defence did not help preparations. Full back Dermot Campbell and Peter Lynch at centre back were both deemed unfit to play. Monaghan sensed this and forward Stephen O'Hanlon lit the touch paper as early as the second minute with a rebounded shot to the net. An off colour Louth side never quite got to the pitch of the game despite levelling twice. Yet the Reds were never completely out of the rollicking encounter either. Ger Brennan's men have a nose for goal and even in retreat they carried that counter-attacking weapon with menace. Captain Sam Mulroy struck for one, Tommy Durnin followed with another, and somehow, Louth trailed by just three at the break, 1-11 to 2-3, despite being second best in most departments. However Monaghan were unrelenting in between those majors. They thundered out after the interval, reeling off four quick-fire points. Stephen Mooney and Dessie Ward topped up with their third points of the day. Still, Louth refused to roll over. Champions don't go quietly. Mulroy, despite his struggles from placed balls, buried a penalty that offered a lifeline. Micheál Bannigan however was in no mood for a dramatic comeback. The centre forward bookmarked a seven-point winning run. As tempers frayed and black cards were flashed to Donal McKenny and Killian Lavelle, the game lost shape, but not its outcome. Even Durnin's late goal was only a footnote, the day, the statement, and the spoils belonged entirely to Monaghan. Scorers for Louth: Sam Mulroy 2-2 (1f, 1-0 pen), Tommy Durnin 2-0, Ryan Burns 0-5 (1f, 2tp), Ciaran Byrne 0-1. Monaghan defeat four-goal Louth in All-Ireland opener

Monaghan defeated Louth 1-23 to 4-8 in their opening Group Three match of the All-Ireland round-robin series at Newbridge on Saturday. The game quickly sparked into life with two goals in the first six minutes. First, Stephen O'Hanlon got the better of Niall McDonnell to put the Farney men in the lead, then Sam Mulroy made the most of Tommy Durnin's pass to respond for the Leinster champions. Mulroy and O'Hanlon both added points to their goals while goalkeeper Rory Beggan came forward to knock over a two-pointer. Louth's second goal made it 1-10 to 2-01, Durnin smashing home Ciaran Downey's rebounded effort. Monaghan's advantage at the break was 1-11 to 2-5, the Ulster side having been the better team, but Ryan Burns' two-pointer keeping Louth within touching distance. Monaghan began the second half strongly with four unanswered points from O'Hanlon (2), Dessie Ward and Stephen Mooney. Louth battled back however and when Conor Grimes was brought down after a surging run, Mulroy dispatched the penalty despite Beggan going the right way. That reduced the arrears to 1-16 to 3-7 but Monaghan responded well with points from Micheal Bannigan, sub Jack McCarron and Conor McCarthy, then two-pointers from Beggan and Bannigan. In the final minute, Ryan Burns' pass set up Durnin for Louth's fourth goal but it was their opponents who held on for a deserved win. Next up for Monaghan will be a meeting with Clare, while Louth will face Down in their next fixture.
