St. Louis County says parvo shelter outbreak is ‘under control'

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – St. Louis County Executive Sam Page announced that the Parvo virus outbreak at the county animal shelter is now under control. The outbreak, described as the 'worst' in county history, led to the euthanization of 19 dogs last week and prompted the closure of the shelter to prevent further spread of the virus. Sam Page pitches proposal to combat food insecurity after vetoing another

CLAYTON, Mo. – St. Louis County Executive Sam Page vetoed a bill that he says would have used public funds for a private purpose. Last year, the county set aside $4.4 million in ARPA funds to put toward food insecurity. But the plan stalled due to strict federal guidelines to have that money appropriated by the end of 2024. Page and the county council agreed to move the money into general funds. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now Two weeks ago, the council approved $3.2 million in funds to farms in north St. Louis County and a half-dozen other vendors. But Page vetoed a bill that would have given $3.2 million to Rustic Roots Sanctuary. 'While the intent of this legislation was a good one, the bill does not pass legal muster,' County Executive Sam Page said. 'Without going through the legal process to select vendors for county funds, I can't and will not sign contracts.' Southwest Airlines to cut flights this year due to economic 'uncertainty' Page acknowledges that food insecurity is a challenge to St. Louis County residents, with 20% of children in north county facing food insecurities. Last Friday, Page met with three farmers that opted out of the Rustic Roots program. Page's proposal is to develop programs, services, and projects to provide long term solutions, using $4.5 million to increase resources. 'With the council's approval, the county's procurement office will solicit bids to establish a food and insecurity project,' Page said. 'This new project will be housed in the St. Louis County Department of Human Services.' Page will also ask the county council for another $100,000 to staff the position. Page said his office is working on STLCO2050, a top priority to addressing food insecurity. 'There's the production and the education component of teaching people on a smaller scale of how to produce their own food,' Page said. 'There's the collection of that to stores or subscription services or grocery stores. So, there is also an educational component to let people know where the food is available.' Page says a request for proposal should be in front of the council in a week and then a couple of months to get the program off the ground. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Proposition B to appear on St. Louis County ballots

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – After a lengthy legal battle, voters in St. Louis County will have the chance to cast their vote on Proposition B Tuesday. Citizens heading to the polls for the April General Municipal Election will see Proposition B, which reads: 'Shall Section 2.190.3 be added to and Sections 4.020 and 5.020 of the Charter of County be amended to restore checks and balances, oversight, and accountabilityof the executive branch by authorizing removal of the St. Louis County Counselor or anyDepartment Director by five of the seven Councilmembers as set forth in Exhibit A ofOrdinance No. 29,241, on file with the St. Louis County Administrative Director and theSt. Louis County Board of Election Commissioners? The cost of legal counsel authorized ifthis amendment passes has no fiscal impact on taxes.' Essentially, the measure would grant the county council the authority to remove department heads with five of seven council members' votes, or a 'supermajority.' Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now The proposition faced a great amount of scrutiny by St. Louis County department heads—to the point of it reaching the Missouri Supreme Court. A lawsuit against the county council claimed that the ballot language was misleading to voters and failed to explain how the proposition would 'radically amend' St. Louis County law. In February, the Missouri Supreme Court sided with the county council, allowing Proposition B to stay on the ballot. A 'yes' vote on Proposition B would approve the St. Louis County Council's ability to remove department heads with a 'supermajority' vote, or with five out of seven members' votes. A 'no' vote on Proposition B would reject the St. Louis County Council from being able to remove department heads with a 'supermajority' vote, or with five out of seven members' votes. Most recently, County Executive Sam Page has been accused of improperly using public funds for fliers opposing Prop B. To see St. Louis County's sample ballots, click here. New facility at Florissant Valley campus prepares students for careers

FLORISSANT, Mo. – Big news for the St. Louis Community College campus at Florissant Valley as a new state-of-the-art building will help train students in multiple fields. The facility is one of six new buildings on the four Saint Louis Community College campuses to open this year as a result of proposition R. Voters approved the measure in 2021—allowing for an eight-cent tax increase to improve St. Louis Community College campuses. 'About 60% of Missourians don't end up going to a traditional four-year school. That's a huge amount of people we can work with to get them into a great career and a great effort. A lot of those kids would come to a community college and then decide to go to a 4 year school,' said Governor Mike Kehoe. There are multiple hands-on training labs in the new facility for fields like HVAC, welding, electronics and biomedical equipment repair. There is also a specific part of the building to train students for jobs with Boeing in the areas of sheet metal and composites. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
