Perth Glory sign All Whites defender Sam Sutton
Sam Sutton. Photo: Masanori Udagawa / PHOTOSPORT All Whites and former Phoenix defender Sam Sutton has signed a three-year deal with Perth Glory. Sutton, 23, left the Phoenix this month after nearly a decade with the club having joined Wellington's academy at the age of 14. He played 98 games A-League games for the Phoenix in six seasons in the senior squad and said upon his departure he hoped it was a 'see you later' rather than a 'good-bye'. "The club's been a big part of my life, and it's meant everything to me," Sutton said. "The Phoenix is my home. I've been here for the best part of 10 years and not winning any silverware is pretty heartbreaking for me." The left-back is the first new arrival at Glory since the end of their season in which Glory collected the wooden spoon for the second consecutive season. The Perth move had been widely anticipated and Sutton is expected to be joined there by former Phoenix defender Scott Wootten, who has also left the club. "I decided to sign for Perth for many reasons," Sutton said. "Firstly, I've been there many times and it's definitely my favourite city in Australia, but more importantly, the passion, belief and ambition I got from (coach) David Zdrilic and (Glory football director) Stan Lazaridis was the key determining factor," he said. "I believe in the calibre of players we are keeping and the ones we intend to bring in, and hope we can win some silverware." Lazaridis said they had been monitoring Sutton for a while. "He has all the attributes required to really fit our playing style. "He's a tenacious defender with a great engine who also likes to get forward and is capable of providing quality delivery into the box. "At 23, we believe we have signed him at a great time and that he will continue his development into one of the best left-backs in the A-League."

A-League Men: Perth Glory sign Wellington Phoenix full-back Sam Sutton on a three-year deal
Perth Glory have made their second visa signing of the off-season, with Wellington Phoenix left-back Sam Sutton signing on for the next three years. The five-time New Zealand international has been heavily linked with Glory for some time, as has his Phoenix teammate Scott Wootton. 23 year-old Sutton has spent the past decade at the 'Nix, graduating from their academy to make more than 100 appearances in the yellow and black. He was an ever-present for Wellington last season as he made 23 starts at left-back and his arrival fills an area of need for Perth. Glory let go of both Belgian left-back Anas Hamzaoui and local product Riley Warland, while Japanese import Yuto Misao's contract is expiring, leaving only young Zach Lisolajski as cover on the left side of defence. Sutton said he was thrilled to be moving west, and went as far to expouse the virtues of the WA lifestyle. 'I decided to sign for Perth for many reasons. Firstly, I've been there many times and it's definitely my favourite city in Australia,' he said. 'But more importantly, the passion, belief and ambition I got from (coach) David Zdrilic and (football director) Stan Lazaridis was the key determining factor. 'Their hunger to win trophies matches mine and I'm eager to start the season already. 'I believe in the calibre of players we are keeping and the ones we intend to bring in and hope we can win some silverware.' Lazaridis was confident that Sutton will prove to be an excellent pick-up for the club. 'Sam is someone we've been monitoring for a while and he has all the attributes required to really fit our playing style. 'He's a tenacious defender with a great engine who also likes to get forward and is capable of providing quality delivery into the box. 'At 23, we believe we have signed him at a great time and that he will continue his development into one of the best left-backs in the A-League.'

GOP fights to flip NY Senate seat in Tuesday special election after Trump won big in blue territory
Republicans are looking to pick up a state Senate seat in a Tuesday special election in a southern Brooklyn district that President Trump carried last year with 77% of the vote. GOP candidate Nachman Caller and Democrat Sam Sutton are running for a vacant seat after former state Sen. Simcha Felder recently won a special election to fill a vacancy in the City Council. The 22nd district encampases heavy Jewish neightborhoods including Midwood, Flatbush, Borough Park, Madison, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach, Gravesend and Sheepshead Bay. Democrats greatly outnumber Republicans but many are moderate-to-conservative voters who will cross party lines. Felder, a conservative Democrat who once caucused with Republicans, has not endorsed in the race. Democrat Sutton has deep ties to the Sephardic community. He is a co-leader of the Sephardic Community Federation. Caller, a Republican district leader, is a real estate lawyer who previously ran for the state Assembly. Sutton has the support of the Democratic Party establishment, including Bronx Rep. Ritchie Torres, a staunch supporter of Israel who is eying a run for governor. Caller has the backing of upstate Rep. Elise Stefanik, the House Republican chairwoman, and Rep. Mike Lawyer, whose lower Hudson Valley district includes a large orthodox Jewish population. A former Felder campaign strategist, O'Brien 'O.B.' Murray, is working for Caller. Both sides said it's a competitive race and voter turnout will likely determine the outcome. Murray emphasized a Caller victory will leave Democrats two votes shy of a veto proof majority in the Senate. 'This is an opportunity for every voter in the district to say 'enough is enough' to the radical liberal agenda in Albany,' Murray said.

Photo: Photosport Defenders Scott Wootton and Sam Sutton, who have each played over 100 games for the Wellington Phoenix are leaving the A-League club. The pair are believed to have signed with Perth Glory. All White Sutton and Wootton will play their final games for the Phoenix on Wednesday night when Wellington square off against Brisbane Roar in their Australia Cup playoff in Darwin. The Phoenix confirmed their departure in a statement. "Both Sutts and Scotty have left a lasting legacy. Sutts has quite literally grown up at the Phoenix, having joined the academy as a 14-year-old in 2016," said director of football Shaun Gill. Sutton hoped this is a 'see you later' rather than a 'goodbye'. "The club's been a big part of my life, and it's meant everything to me," Sutton said. "The Phoenix is my home. I've been here for the best part of 10 years and not winning any silverware is pretty heartbreaking for me." Sutton said he "loved playing under Uffy and Chief. Both of them are two very good managers. I wish Chiefy nothing but success moving forward with the team."
