First cancer hospital opens in Duhok

Only 50 beds in a general hospital were dedicated for cancer patients without proper care. However, the newly-opened 160-bed Omed Oncology Hospital aims to resolve the issue. Omed is the Kurdish word for hope. 'Today we officially opened a very important project and a strategic project in the city of Duhok, as we had promised in previous years,' Saman Barzanji, the Kurdistan Region Minister of Health, said during a presser in Duhok. He also announced the continuation of several new similar projects in Duhok that had not existed before, emphasizing that they are expected to be completed by next year. Cancer rate is on a sharp rise in the Kurdistan Region, with a diagnosis occurring every hour in the last year, according to data obtained by Rudaw late last year. 'This hospital is very important as the KRG [Kurdistan Regional Government] are looking for universal health coverage, and cancer is one of the non-communicable diseases which should be covered,' Jamela al-Rajaby, WHO representative in Iraq, said during the same press conference. She further explained how the high quality of service is important for them to improve. Rajaby emphasized the importance of the hospital by saying, 'We understand that this hospital will serve the population, including the internally displaced population and these are the mostly need, as the minister said, that those should also reach the people in the rural area.' She also said that the WHO 'contributed in infrastructure, equipment, and readiness of the healthcare provider to continue this.' support. She highlighted the WHO's readiness for further partnership. In 2023, about 9,911 diagnosis cases were recorded across the Kurdistan Region, bringing the diagnosis rate to 27 cases per day or a diagnosis about every 53 minutes. Among the most common types of cancer in the Region, breast cancer tops the charts. Statistics show Erbil has the lion's share, with 55 percent of the recorded diagnoses, followed by Sulaimani at 33 percent and Duhok and Halabja province at 12 percent. In Sulaimani province, Hiwa Hospital is the only facility offering cancer treatment, drawing patients from across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

Kurdish Health Minister: Two CCHF cases confirmed, including fatality
Shafaq News/ On Saturday, Kurdistan Region health authorities confirmed two cases of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), including one death, as the virus continues to spread across the country. In a press conferene, Kurdish Health Minister Saman Barzanji reported that a 45-year-old woman from the Shiladze area in Al-Amadiya district died after being infected through contact with livestock kept at her home. He also warned that the virus 's expansion across Iraq makes its arrival in the Kurdistan Region 'unavoidable,' urging livestock handlers and residents to follow strict health protocols to limit transmission. Earlier today, the Duhok Health Directorate identified the woman's case as the first confirmed CCHF death in both the province and the Kurdistan Region for 2025. The latest infection follows last week's confirmation of the Region's first CCHF case this year, a 42-year-old butcher in Erbil, prompting an emergency response from health and veterinary teams across multiple provinces.

Kurdistan's Health Ministry: No CCHF cases recorded
Shafaq News/ Kurdistan Region's Minister of Health, Saman Barzanji, said on Sunday that no cases of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) have been recorded in the Region, despite outbreaks reported in some Iraqi provinces. 'The mortality rate of hemorrhagic fever ranges between 50% and 60%, as the virus causes internal bleeding and is extremely difficult to control,' Barzanji told reporters. He added that while cases were registered in previous years within the Region, they were successfully treated. "Fortunately, we currently have no cases and no suspected infections of this disease." Earlier today, Dr. Dlovan Mohammed, Director General of Health in Erbil, confirmed to Shafaq News Agency that 'no cases of hemorrhagic fever have been recorded so far,' with health committees closely monitoring the situation, especially following confirmed cases and deaths in other parts of Iraq.

Kurdistan Health Ministry discusses medical cooperation with Global Coalition
Shafaq News/ Kurdistan Region's Health Minister, Saman Barzanji, met with a delegation from the Global Coalition on Monday to discuss strengthening healthcare cooperation and developing medical institutions in the Region. According to a statement from the Health Ministry, Barzanji received the coalition delegation, which included the commander of the Italian forces, his deputy, and the new medical team of Yawarian. The meeting focused on exchanging medical expertise and enhancing collaboration in the health sector. Discussions also covered strengthening ties between Kurdistan's healthcare institutions and the coalition's medical team, as well as programs aimed at improving the skills of healthcare workers and expanding medical cooperation and mutual support.
