No relief in sight as mercury heads north in city
Bhubaneswar: The capital city on Monday recorded a maximum temperature of 39.6 degrees Celsius, slightly lower than Balasore, which recorded the highest of 39.8C, with the oppressive heat and humidity affecting residents.

The temperature was 33C at 8:30 am on Monday, with relative humidity at 55.4%. As the day progressed, the temperature rose, and by 11.30 am, the city recorded 37.4C, which was one degree more than the temperature at that time on the previous day. On May 30, the city recorded 35.8C.
"A week ago, the weather was so pleasant with cool breeze and sporadic rain. Suddenly the weather has become humid along with oppressive heat.
Even a morning walk at 5.30 am was difficult due to high humidity," said Samarjit Sahu, a senior citizen and resident of Madhusudan Nagar.
The IMD forecast that hot and humid conditions are likely to prevail in coastal districts until June 7, with no significant relief. The northern limit of the monsoon has reached Puri and Bhawanipatna, but its advancement has slowed down.
A trough extending from east Uttar Pradesh to northeast Assam is active at 0.9 km above mean sea level but had little impact on overall weather in Odisha.
Light rainfall occurred at one or two places in Mayurbhanj district, while dry weather prevailed in the rest of the state. Phulbani recorded the lowest minimum temperature at 22.5C on Monday.
As per the IMD's forecast, hot and humid weather will prevail at one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati districts until June 7. Besides, light to moderate rain or thundershower may occur at one or two places in districts such as Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangapur, Kalahandi and Mayurbhanj. However, dry weather is likely to continue in the remaining districts.
In the wake of the adverse weather conditions, residents have been advised to stay hydrated, avoid direct exposure to the sun during peak hours, and take necessary precautions.
