It's Congress vs Congress as Kharge slams Karnataka SC survey

The Congress party's Samarpane Sankalpa event on Tuesday in Karnataka's Hospet, meant to be a celebratory occasion marking two years of the Siddaramaiah-led government in office, did not go exactly as planned. Rifts within the Congress party emerged in the open. At the event attended by Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, and Deputy CM D K Shivakumar, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge voiced sharp criticism over the inclusion of the Bedar Jangamas community, listed as an Other Backward Class (OBC), in Karnataka's ongoing caste survey of Scheduled Castes (SCs).advertisementCongress President Kharge warned that including the Bedar Jangamas group in the SC list would harm the interests of the Dalit community, reported news agency PTI. Kharge himself is a member of the Dalit community from Karnataka's open airing of disagreements over caste and quotas points at the internal rifts within the party on a contentious issue which the Congress and its scion, Rahul Gandhi, had of late made the cornerstone of its political messaging. While the Siddaramaiah Cabinet is sitting on the separate Social and Educational Survey report, popularly known as the 'caste census' of 2015, following resistance from the 'dominant' Lingayat and Vokkaliga communities, Kharge insisted that the new census for sub-categorisation of the SCs must be conducted properly. The criticism from Kharge echoes the same kind of disagreements that emerged after the 2015 caste census report was tabled in also warned that the Siddaramaiah government must ensure the process does not create future problems or damage the reputation of party leader Rahul RAISES CONCERNS OVER BEDAR JANGAMAS INCLUSION IN SC LISTReferring to Karnataka's SC survey, which is assessing the socio-economic conditions of SC communities, Kharge took up the inclusion of the Bedar Jangamas community, and argued that adding the OBC group to an SC-focused survey undermines the goal of addressing the historical disadvantages faced by Scheduled Castes."Support poor Lingayats within the Lingayat community and provide necessary facilities. But including Bedar Jangamas as SCs -- from just 500 people in the Hyderabad Karnataka region, how did the population jump to 4–5 lakh? Where did they come from? This is unfair. Their inclusion in the SC list will harm Dalit communities and deprive genuine SCs of their rights. Is the intent to help SCs or to take away their entitlements?" Kharge was quoted as saying by PTI and the Deccan Herald newspaper."To help the people, internal SC reservations are being introduced by the state government. At this juncture, if attempts are being made to fail this by including other castes, then it will neither help the state nor the country," Kharge was quoted as saying by The Indian flagged the inclusion of the Bedar Jangamas community in the SC list as a concern because they traditionally belong to the Lingayat OBC Bedar Jangamas community was included among both the Lingayat and SC categories in the 2015 Karnataka caste survey, according to The Indian rebuke comes a week after Karnataka's Food and Civil Supplies Minister KH Muniyappa, also from the SC community, warned CM Siddaramaiah about the risk of Lingayats being counted as Bedar Jangamas in the ongoing survey, noted the Deccan Herald week, The Hindu reported that while Muniyappa flagged his concerns regarding the enumeration of the community as SCs, the Bedar Jangamas community itself went to court, calling the requirement to show caste certificates during enumeration "discriminatory".2015 KARNATAKA CASTE CENSUS ALSO SAW CONGRESS DIVIDEDThe 2015 Karnataka caste census, commissioned by Siddaramaiah during his first term, also caused divisions within the Congress party. The findings reported a notable decrease in the population share of dominant communities like Lingayats and Vokkaligas, pegging them at 26% leaders from these communities, who have historically wielded significant political influence, expressed strong reservations about the census and its potential implementation, fearing it could undermine their communities' dominance and reduce their reservation seers and Vokkaliga leaders openly opposed the census, with some Lingayat ministers even petitioning Siddaramaiah to discard the Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, who belongs to the Vokkaliga community, even called for a rejection of its backlash led to the Karnataka cabinet deferring a decision on the census in April 2025. In-party political opposition in the Congress from these dominant caste groups has delayed its criticism or warning from Congress President Kharge, as one might interpret it, exposes divisions within the party over Karnataka's SC survey, which echoes the similar differences seen with the 2015 caste census report. This even as Rahul Gandhi tries to champion a pan-India caste census despite differences within his own InTrending Reel

Kharge slams PM, says failed to prevent Pahalgam terror attack

HOSAPETE: Going on the offensive against the Centre from his home base, AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge has alleged a major security lapse behind the recent Pahalgam terror attack. Speaking at the 'Samarpane Sankalpa' rally held on Tuesday to mark the second anniversary of the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government in Karnataka, Kharge claimed that 26 innocent lives could have been saved if the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union Government had ensured proper security through local police, the Border Security Force, or the Army. Kharge reiterated his earlier statement that Prime Minister Modi had cancelled his planned visit to Jammu and Kashmir on April 17, after receiving intelligence inputs. He questioned why similar warnings were not communicated to tourists, which, he said, could have prevented the tragic loss of life. The Congress president also played down the recent skirmishes between India and Pakistan by calling it 'chut-put'. Kharge said Pakistan is a weak country and has no strength of its own. 'Pakistan used China-made arms and ammunition to attack India, but failed miserably. Its efforts to disturb the unity of the country also did not succeed,' he said.

Have fulfilled 142 of the promises made in two years, declares CM

Hosapete: We have fulfilled 142 of the promises made during the elections, along with five guarantees, in two years. We will fulfil the rest of the promises in the next three years, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah assured. Speaking at the 'Samarpane Sankalpa' conference organized by the Revenue Department to mark the completion of two years of the government, distributing land titles to 111,111 people and unveiling a statue of the Iron Lady Indira Gandhi. CM Siddaramaiah said that out of the 165 promises we made as the Chief Minister for the first time, we have fulfilled 158 promises and have formulated and implemented 30 new programmes that were not announced in the manifesto. He questioned why the BJP is lying to the people and not fulfilling the promises it had made. 'Our state is a garden of peace for all races. A state that respects everyone equally. All religions should be treated equally under the Constitution. We are following this value', he said. 'We are losing money every year from the central government. If we give 4.5 lakh crores in taxes every year, we get back only 14 paise for every rupee. This is tarnishing the dignity of the federal system', he said. 'Even centrally sponsored projects have not received full funding from the Centre. The state government has given the full state share to the central projects. But the central government is doing injustice by not giving its share. You all know the injustice done to the state in the 15th financial plan. Not a single penny of the Rs 5300 crores announced for the Bhadra Upper River Project was released. They promised to declare the Bhadra Upper River Project as a national project. This too was not fulfilled.' Now JDS and BJP have come together. But BJP has never come to power on its own. Except for coming to power after Operation Kamala, BJP has never been elected by the people in the state till date, he said. BJP's commission corruption has been proven: CM The previous BJP government was accused of 40% commission. We fought against this, after coming to power, we formed the Nagamohan Das Committee to investigate. He said that the report given by the committee proved the commission business. We are giving Rs 2000 to the heads of 1.22 crore families under the Grihalakshmi scheme. We have provided facilities to 1.30 crore families under the Gruha Jyoti scheme. We have also made arrangements for free travel for women of the entire state under the Shakti scheme, he said. What is the price of gold now? The price of gold, which was Rs 10,000 in 2014, is now Rs 1 lakh. The price of gas, which was Rs 400, is now Rs 850. There is public anger against the Modi government at the Centre, which has raised the prices of diesel, petrol, oil, pulses, pulses and fertilizers to the sky, but there is public opinion in favour of our government, he said. Therefore, the programme organised by the BJP is fake, he said. The people of the state are our owners. We have acted as we promised to our owners. As long as we have your blessings, there is no question of us being afraid of the BJP's bundle of lies.

"These people are speaking the language of Pakistan": Eknath Shinde on Congress leader Kharge's 'small war' remarks

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 20 (ANI): Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde on Tuesday criticised Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's comment referring to Operation Sindoor as 'a small war', accusing the Congress party of speaking like Pakistan. He highlighted India's strong stance against Pakistan and criticised the Congress for its past silence on terror attacks, such as 26/11. While speaking at an event, Shinde said, '... When 26/11 attacks happened, not even a word was uttered by them... This time, India showed intolerance against Pakistan... Did they (Congress) show such will power?... These people are speaking the language of Pakistan...' This comes after Kharge, in a veiled jab at Operation Sindoor, said that the government is going 'chutput' (small) wars against Pakistan.'Now, in these chhutput yuddha (small wars) that have taken place here and there, Pakistan has been downplaying India at all levels, particularly with tacit support from China,' said Kharge while speaking at the Samarpane Sankalpa rally in Karnataka. Additionally, the dY cm announced the state's new housing policy, aiming to construct 35 lakh houses by 2030 with an investment of Rs 70,000 crore. This initiative targets various categories and classes, including slum development through cluster development. Speaking at an event, he added that the initiative would be inclusive, covering economically weaker sections, low-income groups, and working women. 'All sections of society-especially the economically weaker and low-income groups-have been included in this scheme,' Shinde said. These homes will be rented for the first 10 years, after which ownership will be transferred to the respective individuals. The state government has also developed an AI-based State Housing Information Portal to provide real-time information on housing availability and application status. This portal will help align housing demand and supply. People will know where houses are available and where they can apply, the deputy CM added. Slum rehabilitation is also a key part of the new housing policy. 'Slums will be redeveloped through cluster development. We will also bring back original Mumbai residents who moved out...,' Shinde assured. (ANI)
