Al Salimi wins bronze in Asian Handcycling Championship

Muscat: Sami al Salimi, star of the Oman Paralympic Committee's national handcycling team, clinched the bronze medal in the 20 km time trial at the 13th Asian Championship, currently hosted by Thailand, featuring top athletes from across the continent. The race witnessed intense competition among Asia's top handcyclists, with Al Salimi facing off against experienced riders from Thailand, India, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, all of whom came into the championship with extensive preparation. Despite the strong competition, Al Salimi managed to assert himself throughout the race, delivering an impressive time that secured his spot on the podium and earned him the well deserved bronze medal. Mansoor al Touqi, Chairman of the Oman Paralympic Committee, expressed his pride in this accomplishment, emphasising that winning a bronze medal at a major continental championship reflects Al Salimi's determination and resilience, despite limited preparation compared to other teams. "What Sami al Salimi has achieved is a well earned victory, proving the ability of our athletes to shine despite challenges. He competed against athletes from nations with significant resources and strong preparations, yet he succeeded in raising Oman's flag on the podium," Al Touqi stated. He added that this success is a continuation of Al Salimi's previous achievements in various international competitions, highlighting the athlete's fighting spirit and ability to compete in different races. He expressed hope that the athlete would secure another strong result, further adding to Oman's para cycling accomplishments. This achievement marks a significant milestone in Oman's growing handcycling scene, which has seen remarkable development in recent years, with athletes achieving commendable results on regional and international stages. Officials from the Oman Paralympic Committee hope that this victory will inspire more athletes to take up the sport and further enhance Oman's presence in global competitions.
