Your questions: Is an eSIM the best option for roaming overseas?

We are a couple in our 60s doing a 15-day tour of Egypt and Jordan in September, followed by Greece before another 15-day tour of Turkey. Is an eSIM the best way to go? We both have Samsung S22 phones, with Optus and Telstra. Neither of us are very tech savvy. M. Johnson, Loftus, NSW Provided your phones are unlocked, eSIMs are the way to go, but they can be fiddly. Here's how you can try it out before leaving home, just to see if this is going to be a good option. Jetpac has a special deal on one of its Asia/Pacific eSIMS, just $US1 for 1Gb of data. This eSIM works in Australia. Download the Jetpac app, buy this eSIM and activate it. This is a step-by-step process detailed in the app and it's straightforward. If you have difficulty, there are videos on YouTube, or else get a teenage grandchild/nephew/neighbour to help you out. Jetpac's customer assistance is also very helpful. To see if it's working, turn off your Optus/Telstra SIM and your home Wi-Fi and use some of your phone apps to see if you still have a data connection. If all is well, you could then purchase a Jetpac Global eSIM which will give you data in Egypt, Greece and Turkey, but not Jordan. Airalo is one of the few eSIM providers that offers service in Jordan but its products are generally more expensive than Jetpac's. I called our credit card company, Qantas Platinum, to confirm travel insurance for an upcoming trip. Our flights were booked with airline points and all I paid on the credit card were the taxes of about $1000 per ticket. The call centre operator seemed to be saying that we wouldn't be covered because our tickets were not totally paid for by the credit card. Have you had this experience? A. Patterson, Gladesville, NSW A call to Chubb, the underwriter for Qantas Premier Credit Card Complimentary Travel Insurance, confirmed that despite paying for only the taxes and charges with your card, this would be sufficient to activate the free travel insurance cover. According to the product disclosure statement for this card, one of the eligibility criteria is: 'by charging the payment to your Qantas Premier Credit Card and/or using Qantas points on the Qantas Premier Credit Card'. The same conditions apply if you pay only the taxes and charges component of an airfare using some other cards, for example an American Express credit card. My husband and I are looking for a cruise around New Zealand that won't involve more than one Australian port. Does such a cruise exist or are we better off flying to NZ and driving ourselves around? R. Robbins, Hawthorn, Vic Holland America Line has a 14-day New Zealand Cruise departing Sydney on December 7, 2025 and calling in at Milford Sound followed by a succession of port calls along the east coast of the South Island followed by the North Island. After visiting Waitangi, in the Bay of Islands, the vessel re-crosses the Tasman Sea to Sydney. The ship is the Noordam, a moderate-size cruise vessel that can accommodate close to 2000 passengers. As with most ships in the Holland America fleet, the Noordam is known for its intimate feel, quiet spaces, educational programs and its high-quality food. Prices start from $3419 a person. Celebrity Cruises has a 12-night New Zealand cruise that follows a similar itinerary but with fewer port visits, also departing from and returning to Sydney, from $2584 a person. The first of six sailings is November 18, 2025. The vessel is the Celebrity Edge, rated a five-star cruise ship due to its long list of onboard facilities that appeal to those who like plenty of action. It is capable of carrying 2900 passengers. Self-drive holidays are a great way to see New Zealand. They require more work and research than a cruise, but the flexibility to go when and where you like is what makes self-drive the holiday of choice for many Australian travellers.

North Dakota mayor resigns after texting lewd video to city attorney

North Dakota mayor resigns after texting lewd video to city attorney A North Dakota mayor resigned on Tuesday after an investigation into a lewd video he messaged to the city's top attorney in January. Minot Mayor Tom Ross texted City Attorney Stefanie Stalheim a video of him masturbating shortly after the two talked on the phone about a police officer's suicide, according to a report issued by the Minot City Council. Ross called Stalheim within minutes of sending the video, asking her to delete it without watching it and telling her it was intended for a girlfriend. The mayor stepped down from office the same day Minot legislators made the report into the incident public. "As much as I love the City of Minot and where it is heading, for the last, just about 5 years, I have had my priorities misaligned," Ross wrote in a resignation letter. "While I've done my very best to be a good leader, it's clear that time has come to an end." Ross told investigators that he sent the "sexy video" intended for his girlfriend on Jan. 14 when he was home on his lunch break. According to the report, he attributed the snafu to his unfamiliarity with using an iPhone compared to his Samsung S22 phone. The heart of the news — fast. He also said that his girlfriend's name begins with "C" and Stalheim was saved in his as "City Attorney," the report added. Upon hearing the mayor's description of the video content, Stalheim told investigators she "fell out of her chair." The reaction, according to Stalheim, was also due to the "combined stress" of receiving news of the police officer's death, the report added. The city prosecutor asked another employee in the room to delete the video, who, in doing so, "caused it to play," according to the report. As a result, the employee, a Human Resources representative, "viewed some or all of the video." "The investigator found somewhat credible Ross's statements that the video was sent to Stalheim unintentionally and that the video was intended for Ross's intimate partner," the report added. "Due to Ross's position as one of increased visibility, responsibility, and trust, and due to his decision to use a personal cell phone to conduct city business, that the fact he would use that device to record and send videos of this nature is in and of itself reckless enough that he knew the risk he was taking by engaging in such behavior." Ross was elected mayor in 2022 after serving on the city council since 2020, according to a city profile of the former officials. Minot, home to more than 47,000 people, is located about 50 miles south of the Canadian border. The North Dakota city is known for a nearby Air Force base. Springfield man charged after robbing, shooting at man's home

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A Springfield man has been charged after burglarizing a man's home and shooting at him before evading police in a stolen car. Online court records show Ryan Anthony Major has been charged with six felonies and a misdemeanor, including: first-degree robbery two counts of armed criminal action shoot firearm at/from a motor vehicle/shoot at person unlawful possession of a firearm first-degree burglary resisting arrest A probable cause statement from the Springfield Police Department (SPD) says the burglary happened on Jan. 28, 2025. The victim was across the street from the house when he noticed an unfamiliar red Camaro in the driveway and a man, later identified as Major, carrying a tote from inside the residence. Documents say the victim confronted Major and pulled the tote from the open trunk of the Camaro, but Major picked the tote up and emptied the contents into the trunk. The victim told police they tried to get their property a second time, but Major slammed the trunk onto their hands. As Major backed out of the driveway, the victim told SPD he picked up a hammer and shattered the passenger window of the Camaro. Documents say Major responded by pointing a gun out the window and firing at the victim. Mom of abducted 2-year-old sentenced to 7 years According to documents, Major got away with several of the victim's items, including clothing, various hand tools and their Samsung S22 cell phone. Police say an officer spotted the Camaro outside a hotel on north Glenstone Avenue. When the officer tried to contact Major, documents say he got into the car and sped off, despite the officer's verbal commands to get out of the vehicle. The Camaro was later located outside a church in the 2900 block of North Barnes Avenue, documents say, and Major was seen running away from the building on video footage from the church. Documents say Major was later found at the hotel on Glenstone and taken into custody. Investigators discovered the Camaro was listed as stolen by the Branson Police Department. Major is currently being held in the Greene County Jail and is scheduled for a March 31, 2025 court hearing. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Prison officer who kissed inmate and sent 'sexualised' messages jailed

A prison officer who kissed and sat on the lap of an inmate she was in a relationship with has been jailed for a year. Toni Cole, 29, shared 4,431 texts and calls with a 28-year prisoner at HMP Five Wells in Northamptonshire. The texts and calls, which took place over five months, were "sexualised or flirtatious" in nature and included a photograph of underwear, Northamptonshire Police said. Cole pleaded guilty to misconduct in a public office and was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment and ordered to pay a £187 surcharge at Northampton Crown Court last week. Police said Cole spent "considerable time" with the prisoner, whom she admitted she had kissed on at least one occasion, at the prison in Wellingborough. Police said the relationship came to light during a meeting on 25 January 2023, which had been arranged to discuss an unauthorised overtime shift she had worked two days earlier. The force said CCTV footage of that shift showed the prisoner with his arm around Cole. The prison officer, of Gordon Road, Wellingborough, had her Samsung S22 mobile phone seized from her locker when she was arrested. Police found there had been at least 18 video calls between the pair and they had shared messages between September 2022 and January 2023. The investigation also found Cole had sat on the inmate's lap and "promised to tip him off" if she found out his cell was going to be "spun" by her colleagues. Detective Inspector Richard Cornell, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, said: "Toni Cole knew what she was doing was totally inappropriate, and that her behaviour was not only putting her at risk, but also the safety of her colleagues and inmates. "The majority of prison staff carry out their duties to the highest standards, and I hope this sentence sends a clear message to those who seek to undermine public trust while holding positions of authority that inappropriate relationships will be robustly dealt with using the full force of the law."
