San Francisco 49ers Receiver Jauan Jennings Listed As Candidate for Contract Extension
The San Francisco 49ers' 2024 stumble preceded an offseason of turnover. The cap constraints of the Super Bowl window have forced the 49ers' hand. They've lost 17 free agents to new homes and traded receiver Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders. Despite those departures, San Francisco also made its fair share of long-term commitments. Tight end George Kittle and quarterback Brock Purdy recently received significant extensions, the latter being one of the most important moves of the Kyle Shanahan era. On Monday, linebacker Fred Warner became the highest-paid linebacker in the sport. Advertisement Clearly, the team's turnover has not precluded it from keeping core pieces around. As such, one key 49ers contributor is emerging as another extension candidate. Niners Nation recently listed receiver Jauan Jennings as a potential long-term option for San Francisco, and after his breakout 2024 campaign, it's hard not to buy his stock. 'The obvious candidate remaining is slot wide receiver Jauan Jennings, who signed a two-year, $15.4 million extension last offseason,' Rohan Chakravarthi wrote. 'Entering the final year of his deal once again, Jennings could look for a bump in pay ahead of the 2025 season after blowing his career numbers through the roof in 2024.' It goes without saying that in Brandon Aiyuk's absence, Jennings filled his shoes. He logged 77 catches for 975 yards and six scores. He ascended from an unheralded cog in San Francisco's offensive machine to one of the most important players on the roster, pairing his elite blocking with pass-catching nuance. Advertisement Jennings wasn't merely the best receiver on a beaten-down 49ers team. According to nfelo, Jennings generated the 17th-most expected points added among receivers with the 26th-highest target share and 28th-best catch rate over expected. 'Now entering a contract year once again, the 49ers could look to re-ink Jennings on a multi-year deal entering his age-28 season,' Chakravarthi continued. 'The slot wideout is a great fit in San Francisco's offense and would provide the 49ers with a long-term trio of Jennings, Aiyuk, and 2024 first-round pick Ricky Pearsall.' According to Over the Cap, Jennings is the 42nd-highest paid receiver in the sport, by average annual value. With one year of substantial production, he likely wouldn't be overly expensive. San Francisco could realistically help Jennings crack the top 30 at the position without making a real dent in next season's (limited) cap space. Given his importance to the offense and the stability of his role, that's a safe bet to make. Christian McCaffrey 'as healthy as can be,' says 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan from OTAs
Perhaps the best news out of San Francisco 49ers' OTAs is head coach Kyle Shanahan saying running back Christian McCaffrey is "as healthy as can be." McCaffrey, soon to turn 29, was limited to only four games last season due to Achilles tendinitis in both ankles and a right knee injury that prevented him from making any explosive movement or cuts. He rushed for 202 yards with no touchdowns, averaging four yards per carry. Advertisement Videos from the 49ers' workouts in Santa Clara showed McCaffrey making sharp cuts and showing burst out of them, which had everyone excited that the eight-year veteran is fully recovered and healthy going into the 2025-26 season. McCaffrey is two seasons removed from a career-high and NFL-leading 1,459 yards rushing and 14 TDs, with another 564 yards and seven scores on 67 catches. That earned him NFL Offensive Player of the Year, along with being named first-team All-Pro and his third Pro Bowl honor. He signed a two-year, $38 million extension last June, keeping him under contract through 2027. As could be expected, the 49ers' rushing attack was impacted significantly by McCaffrey's absence. The team ranked 12th in the NFL last season with 2,163 yards and 17 TDs, averaging 4.7 yards per carry. Compare that to 2023, when San Francisco ranked third with 2,389 yards and 27 scores, bolstered by McCaffrey's league-leading total. Advertisement Jordan Mason was the 49ers' leading rusher last season with 789 yards and was limited by ankle and shoulder injuries. But he signed with the Minnesota Vikings in free agency. That leaves Isaac Guerendo as San Francisco's top returning rusher with 420 yards. Yet he also struggled with knee and ankle issues. McCaffrey looking recovered and healthy should be especially encouraging for the 49ers, as the running back could miss some of training camp while on paternity leave. But that gives Guerendo, fifth-round pick Jordan James and undrafted free agent Corey Kiner opportunities to get some snaps and prepare to make contributions.

Christian McCaffrey's 2023 overuse, Achilles and Knee injuries raise red flags for 49ers in 2025
McCaffrey's 2023 workload threatens 49ers' 2025 (Image via: Getty Images) Christian McCaffrey was the driving force behind the San Francisco 49ers' offense in 2023 — explosive, tireless, and nearly unstoppable. But that incredible season came with a heavy price: a workload that few players can handle. Now, as the 2025 season approaches, many are wondering if the 49ers pushed their star too hard. With Achilles and knee injuries already affecting his 2024, people are closely watching to see if McCaffrey can stay healthy and bounce back. Christian McCaffrey's injury concerns pose major threat to 49ers' 2025 offense 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey Says He Has No Physical Restrictions Christian McCaffrey carried an immense workload in 2023, logging a staggering 417 touches and leading the NFL in multiple key offensive categories, including rushing yards, scrimmage yards, and total touchdowns. While fans celebrated his outstanding performance, NFL analysts and medical experts raised serious concerns about the long-term impact of such heavy usage. Running backs rarely sustain this level of workload season after season without facing physical consequences and McCaffrey appears to be no exception. By early 2024, Christian McCaffrey's explosiveness and top-end speed showed noticeable decline. NFL Next Gen Stats revealed his maximum speeds barely exceeded 17 mph, a significant drop compared to the blazing pace that helped power the San Francisco 49ers' Super Bowl run in 2023. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Zumbido e perda de audição? Médico revela técnica caseira de 1 real para aliviar! Zumbido no ouvido Undo Analysts observed that McCaffrey looked less agile, less dynamic, and more affected by wear and tear from the previous season's heavy demands. Injuries soon followed, with McCaffrey sidelined by both knee and Achilles issues, injuries known to severely impact a running back's agility and burst. At just 28 years old, an age when running backs typically begin to face decline, these setbacks raise red flags about his durability moving forward. For a player whose success depends on speed, quick cuts, and versatility, any loss of physical ability could drastically affect his on-field performance and the 49ers' offensive strategy. If he cannot return to peak form in 2025, the consequences could extend beyond individual stats to threaten the 49ers' overall offensive efficiency and playoff aspirations. With OTAs and training camp approaching, the NFL world will be watching closely to see if McCaffrey can fully recover or if the 2023 workload has already taken a lasting toll on one of the league's premier running backs. So, about that 2022 draft class
Spencer Burford, Nick Zakelj, Kalia Davis, Brock Purdy. Combined, they have 65 starts—36 of which belong to Purdy. And they are all that remains of the San Francisco 49ers' 2022 draft class. The most recent casualty? Second-round pick Drake Jackson, waived on Friday. It's safe to say the 2022 class wasn't particularly successful. Remove Purdy from that list, and only Burford has more than 10 starts—none of which came in 2024. Advertisement Things can still change: Burford has received praise and will compete for a starting spot, but he's also in year four of trying to lock it down for good. The class didn't have depth, either, as the attrition rate makes clear. If it did, most of those picks might still be on the team. The depth they do have is starting more games than they probably should to hold down the fort—or can't even get on the field. At face value, the 2022 draft helps explain why depth has been a recurring problem. Not like it was easy; this was the second of two consecutive drafts in which the 49ers would not have a first-round selection. Those were packaged up in a deal to the Miami Dolphins to move up and draft Trey Lance in 2021. Purdy would be the do-over from that botch. Everything else? Burford's blocking in pass protection is a good summary if you watch the Super Bowl. Zakelj has started two games in 2024 and spent his first two years trying to simply suit up. Davis has looked OK in limited spurts, but has been battling injury after injury. And Purdy remains the only player from that group you can say—without hesitation—will start in 2025. Advertisement And the 2023 class could be worse. The 49ers didn't have a second-round pick then. Due to the Christian McCaffrey trade, they didn't start their draft until the third round, where they took Jake Moody. This name will go along with the likes of Cameron Latu and Ronnie Bell. The 2022 class gave the 49ers a franchise quarterback—one taken at the very end of the draft, who offered a mulligan for the franchise quarterback they traded two future firsts (and change) to get just a year earlier. But one quarterback doesn't fix the depth issues everywhere else. That's where the cracks started to show. And that's why a single injury to this team in the last couple of seasons can and has led to a massive tidal wave of problems. Advertisement More from

Lots to take away from the San Francisco 49ers 2025 schedule
Lots to take away from the San Francisco 49ers 2025 schedule The San Francisco 49ers' 2025 schedule was released Wednesday evening, giving us a chance to finally dig into what their path to back to the postseason looks like. We've known their opponents since the end of last season, so we've had an idea of what was ahead of them in the 2025 campaign. However, the schedule release gives us a ton of additional context for a potential bounce-back campaign for San Francisco. Here are our takeaways after sifting through their 18-week schedule: 1. 5 primetime games The 49ers are in primetime a whopping five times in 2025. They'll have a Thursday night game, two Sunday Night Football games in Weeks and two Monday Night Football appearances. 2. No holiday games San Francisco won't play in any of the NFL's slew of holiday action. They're off on Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Christmas. 3. A late Bye It may be a struggle to get to they Bye week since San Francisco will play 13 consecutive games to start the year before a Week 13 Bye. That week off could be huge though. It will give them time to get healthy and geared up for the final postseason push in the last four weeks. 4. Thursday night advantage The placement of Thursday Night Football on the 49ers' schedule is pretty favorable. It's early in the year in Week 5. While they do hit the road on the short week, they just have to travel to Southern California to visit the Los Angeles Rams. That will help mitigate some of the perils of the short week. They'll also be home the previous week two weeks against the Arizona Cardinals and Jacksonville Jaguars. Two consecutive home games before a Thursday game that's their shortest road trip of the year isn't a bad way to deal with the truncated week. An added benefit here is the mini bye week that comes after a TNF game, and the 49ers will have a few extra days off to get ready for a cross-country flight to visit the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. 5. Some tough timing One set of games where the timing doesn't favor the 49ers comes in the two contests leading up to the Bye. San Francisco will play Monday night at home against the Carolina Panthers in Week 12. Then they turn around and visit the Cleveland Browns for a 10:00am Pacific Time kick in Week 13. That game in Cleveland could be dangerous. A similar stretch in 2023 featured a road Monday Night Football game vs. the Minnesota Vikings, and then a early kick for a road game against the Browns the following week. The 49ers lost both of those games. Buy San Francisco 49ers 2025 tickets 6. Possible extended stay? San Francisco could have an opportunity for a long road trip this year where they don't come home between two road games. In Week 8 they're at the Houston Texans. They follow that with a trip to New York to face the New York Giants in Week 9. That may be a spot with back-to-back 10:00am Pacific Time kickoffs where the 49ers may stay somewhere on the East Coast to limit some of the impacts of a couple long road trips. The Texans game is San Francisco's shortest non-division flight of the season. It makes sense that they'd try and chop off some of the length of the next week's trip as well. 7. Late-season push opportunity The 49ers will be in a good spot to make a late postseason push after their Week 14 Bye. San Francisco is home after their Bye week against the Tennessee Titans. Then they have a Monday Night Football game followed by a Sunday Night Football game. A home game after the Bye followed by an extra day off for MNF, followed by a late kick the following Sunday should be helpful for a team with some aging veterans. 8. Lot of early starts San Francisco has five kickoffs slated for 10:00am Pacific Time. It's their most since the 2021 season, and tied for the most in the Kyle Shanahan era. They had five early window kicks in 2017 and 2021. Under Shanahan, the 49ers are 16-12 on early kickoffs, including a 10-2 stretch from 2019-21. 9. The hardest part Based on last season's results the 49ers have the weakest strength of schedule in the NFL this season. There's a rough stretch early in the year, though that may quickly show their slate of games isn't as easy as it looks. They have their short week vs. the Rams in Week 5, then they visit the Buccaneers in Week 6 before coming home to host the Atlanta Falcons, then hit the road again for an early start vs. the Houston Texans.
