IPL 2025: Varun Aaron
New Delhi [India], May 21 (ANI): Former India tearaway Varun Aaron was 'surprised' by Rajasthan Royals' decision not to begin with right-arm seamer Akash Madhwal, who fired off a Player of the Match performance with his scorching spell against Chennai Super Kings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in the 18th season of the Indian Premier League. Uttarakhand's Madhwal was thrown into the mix for Rajasthan's last four fixtures after losing its mainstay Sandeep Sharma to injury. He returned with a scalp in his first three matches but shone in the Royals' last game of their shambolic campaign. He broke the backbone of Chennai's middle-order and cleaned up Dewald Brevis with a touch of late swing. In the final over of the first innings, Madhwal kept a check on the scoring rate and punched a return ticket of Chennai's power-hitters Shivam Dube and skipper MS Dhoni. With a stellar outing, the 31-year-old returned with figures of 3/29 after bowling a full quota of four overs, setting the stage for Rajasthan to gun down the 188-run target and trounce the five-time champions. 'I thought he really used the conditions well, pulled some good yorkers with that round-arm action of his. He gets a little tail, just slightly tails in towards the end. Brevis missed it and got the inside edge. He had no hesitation, stuck to his plans, executed really well--and that's how you do well in the IPL,' Aaron said on JioHotstar. Aaron felt that if Madhwal, who possesses 'good' death bowling skills, could have sorted out Rajasthan's woes at the end and formed a 'good' pair with Sandeep Sharma. 'I'm just surprised they didn't start with Akash Madhwal this season. He had a very decent season last year. He's got very good death bowling skills. The biggest concern was their death bowling. Alongside Sandeep Sharma, he would've made a really good pairing. I don't know why they used him only after the 7th or 8th game--but he's delivering results now,' he added. After trouncing Chennai with a six-wicket triumph, Rajasthan finished their campaign in the ninth spot with eight points, and they are likely to hold onto that position considering their superior net run rate to the Super Kings. CSK vs RR, IPL 2025 Live Score: Chennai, Rajasthan lock horns to avoid wooden spoon
The pitch in New Delhi has been a belter with the average score being 193 from five matches. Teams should opt to field first since the pitch may not change nature. Conditions will be clear with temperatures around 33 and 37 degrees Celsius. Jofra Archer not returning to India and Sandeep Sharma's injury have weakened their bowling attack. The focus will be on the young opening pair of Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Yashasvi Jaiswal. The Super Kings and the Royals have faced each other 30 times since 2008. CSK are leading their opponents 16-14. At neutral venues, the head-to-head record stands at 3-3. In their last six meetings, RR have a 5-1 lead. The Royals, on the other hand, will go into the game after Punjab Kings (PBKS) beat them by 10 runs at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. Sanju Samson returned to their team after an injury layoff, but couldn't make a big impact against PBKS. Hence, RR will be desperate to end their three-match losing streak and finish the tournament on a high. The Super Kings are currently languishing at the bottom of the table with six points and a net run rate of -0.992 thanks to wins in three out of 12 matches. But the two-wicket win over the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) earlier this month at the Eden Gardens should give them some confidence.

As the league stage enters its final stretch, the Royals are playing for pride, while the Kings remain in strong contention for a playoff berth. It's been a season filled with missed opportunities for Rajasthan, with several matches slipping through their fingers under pressure. Their campaign has also been hampered by injuries, with Nitish Rana and Sandeep Sharma being the recent ones to be ruled out. South Africa's young left-handed batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius has been brought in as Rana's replacement. Speaking of injuries, Sanju Samson missed a large part of the tournament before the break due to an abdominal issue, but there's a chance he could return for the remaining games. For the Royals, it is now about finding positives and building towards the next season. That could mean opportunities for some fresh faces from the bench, and one name fans will be eager to see is South Africa's exciting pace sensation, Kwena Maphaka. As for the Punjab Kings, they need two wins from their remaining three matches to guarantee a playoff spot. That said, they are in a position where even one win could potentially be enough, depending on how other results unfold. Like all teams, Punjab could lose some of their overseas players after the league stage due to international commitments. Adding to their challenges, they have already lost Glenn Maxwell and Lockie Ferguson to injuries. To cover those losses, Punjab made some reinforcements. Mitchell Owen, who made headlines with a century in the BBL final for Hobart, has been brought in to replace Maxwell, while Kiwi quick Kyle Jamieson replaces Ferguson in the squad. Earlier in the season, when these two sides met, the Royals registered a thumping win in Mullanpur, and the Kings will be out to avenge that loss and take a step towards the playoffs. Who are you backing to come out on top? Hello and welcome from the vibrant Pink City, Jaipur! Match 59 of the Indian Premier League 2025 is set to be played between Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium. This clash promises to be a thrilling encounter between two teams with vastly different fortunes this season. Rajasthan Royals have already been eliminated from the playoffs, sitting ninth on the points table with six points from 12 matches. Despite this, they can still play spoilsport for other teams. The Royals will be boosted by the return of skipper Sanju Samson, who has been recovering from a side strain. However, they'll be without key players like Jofra Archer, Nitish Rana, and Sandeep Sharma, who won't feature for the rest of the season. Nandre Burger was named as a replacement for Sandeep Sharma, but he is yet to join the squad, whereas Lhuan-dre Pretorius has replaced Nitish Rana and is available for selection. Punjab Kings are in a strong position to qualify for the playoffs, sitting third on the points table with 15 points from 11 matches. The side has been in top form, with their batting being the mainstay, and they'll be relying on the opening pair of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh to give them a solid start again. The Punjab Kings are looking strong with recent additions like Mitchell Owen and Kyle Jamieson replacing Glenn Maxwell and Lockie Ferguson in the side. Despite the Royals' win in their last encounter, this match is likely to be closely contested, with Punjab seeking qualification and the Royals looking to give their fans something to cheer and build for the next season. Stay tuned for toss and team updates… PITCH REPORT – Deep Dasgupta and Pommie Mbangwa are pitchside. Deep begins by saying that it is very hot, with the temperature touching 45 degrees Celsius, and that the surface is a bit in the centre of the ground. Informs the dimensions and says it is 63 meters and 67 meters on the squares, with the straight hit being 73 meters. Pommie Mbangwa joins him and adds that heat is going to play a huge role in the game. About the surface, he touches it and feels that it is very warm. Also adds that the groundsmen have tried a lot with the hessians to ensure that the moisture stays in it. Says there's a bit of grass to bind up the surface so that it doesn't break up. Reckons that 180 would be a good total while batting first. Deep then observes a few patches of rough as well and mentions he won't be surprised to see spinners bowling from one end predominantly. Concludes by saying that because of the heat, he would want to field in the second half. The match, the afternoon clash of the first double-header after the IPL's week-long suspension, will be getting underway shortly. TOSS – Tails is the call from the skipper of Punjab Kings, Shreyas Iyer and it lands as tails. Iyer has elected to bat first. RR vs PBKS, IPL 2025 LIVE: Punjab Kings will be aiming to inch closer to their first appearance in the Indian Premier League playoffs in 11 years when they face Rajasthan Royals at Jaipur's Sawai Mansingh Stadium in the afternoon clash of the Sunday double-header. PBKS currently are third in the IPL standings with 15 points, having won seven and lost three so far this season with their away match against Kolkata Knight Riders getting washed out. Rajasthan Royals, on the other hand, have already been eliminated from the playoffs race and are currently playing for pride, and to ensure they avoid finishing at the bottom of the table. RR had thrashed PBKS by 50 runs when the two teams had met in Mullanpur earlier this season. Yashasvi Jaiswal (67 off 45) and Riyan Parag (43 off 25) led the way as the Royals posted 205/4. Jofra Archer's 3/25 as well as handy contributions from Sandeep Sharma (2/21) and Maheesh Theekshana (2/26) ensured the Kings could manage just 155/9 in reply. PBKS had raced to 122/1 after 10.1 overs after opting to bat against Delhi Capitals at Dharamsala's HPCA Stadium, their second home ground, on 8 May when the game had to be called off due to the military conflict between India and Pakistan. IPL 2025: RR ropes in Nandre Burger as replacement for Sandeep Sharma
Rajasthan Royals have brought South African left-arm pacer Nandre Burger back into their squad as a replacement for Sandeep Sharma, who has been ruled out of the remainder of IPL 2025 due to a finger injury. Burger, who played for RR in the 2024 season and picked up seven wickets in six matches, returns to the franchise after going unsold in the 2025 auction. His comeback comes at a critical stage in the tournament as Rajasthan look to stay strong in their push for the playoffs. Burger has represented South Africa across formats and is known for his sharp pace and bounce. RR acquired him this time for ₹3.5 crore, highlighting their belief in his ability to make an immediate impact. The team management sees him as a natural fit to fill the void left by Sandeep's injury, offering left-arm variety and death-overs control. RR also added Lhuan-dre Pretorius as a replacement for injured batter Nitish Rana. Sandeep Sharma ruled out of IPL 2025 Experienced pacer Sandeep Sharma has been forced out of the tournament after sustaining a finger injury. He featured in 10 matches this season for Rajasthan Royals, taking nine wickets and delivering key spells in the powerplay and death overs. With a career spanning 137 IPL matches and 146 wickets at an average of 27.87, his absence will be a setback for RR. Despite the blow, the franchise remains confident that Burger can step up and continue the momentum built by Sandeep, who has often been labelled one of the league's most underrated pacers. Burger's T20 and international record Burger brings with him valuable international experience. He has picked up 14 wickets in 3 Tests, 6 in 5 ODIs, and a wicket in T20Is for South Africa. In domestic and franchise T20s, he has claimed 77 wickets in 69 matches at an average of 23.44, with best figures of 3/11. His pace and aggression make him a useful weapon, especially on surfaces that assist bounce and carry. Lhuan-dre Pretorius replaces injured Nitish Rana In a second injury blow, Nitish Rana has also been ruled out of the season, with RR naming Lhuan-dre Pretorius, a promising South African top-order batter, as his replacement. Pretorius comes in at a base price of ₹30 lakh and has impressed with over 900 T20 runs at a strike rate of 147.17, making him a valuable addition to RR's batting depth. How IPL Player Replacement System Works The Indian Premier League (IPL) has a well-defined set of regulations governing player replacements, particularly when it comes to mid-season injuries. These rules ensure fairness in squad management and salary cap compliance, while also offering clarity to franchises making crucial roster decisions during the course of the season. Right to Retain Replacement Players Franchises that sign replacement players during the 2025, 2026, or 2027 seasons hold the right to extend the contract of that player into the next applicable season. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has clarified that if a franchise chooses to retain a replacement player for future seasons, that player will be treated like any other member of the squad. This means he will count toward the squad composition rules and salary cap in subsequent seasons. Rules for Mid-Season Injury Replacements To ensure replacements are allowed only under genuine circumstances, the IPL has laid out strict conditions for mid-season injury replacements of players who have already featured in a match: Timing of Injury: The injury or illness must occur on or before the team's 12th league match of the season. Medical Confirmation: A BCCI-nominated doctor must confirm that the injury is season-ending, meaning the player will not be fit until after the conclusion of the season, including playoffs. If not for the injury or illness, the player must have been available for all remaining matches in the season. The injury must cause the player to miss all remaining league matches for the team.
