Pune rural police to introduce speed boat for patrolling in Pavana Dam

Pune: The Pune rural police have decided to procure a speed boat for patrolling in Pavana Lake to facilitate monitoring and rescue. The move comes after drowning cases in the lake over the last two years. It will be a pilot project, the police said. Superintendent of police, Sandeep Singh Gill, told TOI that the process to procure the boat and formation of a specialised team will start after the Pandharpur Wari. "Police will select 10 constables with swimming skill and the boat will have rescue equipment like life jackets, rings and others. It will also have a public address system and searchlights. We have already submitted the proposal to the govt and it will be approved," he said. The team will patrol in the lake in day and evening hours. The Pune district has several water bodies which act as tourist destination for people from Mumbai, Pune and other cities in the state and country. There are Panshet, Varasgaon, Mulshi, Ujani, Dimbe, Temghar, Bhama Askhed and many other dams in the Pune rural area apart from the natural lakes. Every year, 50 to 65 people, especially tourists, are reported to have drowned in these lakes. Pavana Dam is close to Lonavla and Khandala. It accommodates many big hotels, resorts with many commercial activities. "Hence, we have selected Pavana Dam for the pilot project," Gill said. The dam is located in a valley with serpentine roads. Police parties take a lot of time to patrol these areas, especially during the monsoon. Gill said, "Patrolling the banks of the lake is a difficult task by road due to continuous turns, slopes and hills. While in the waters, police can easily spot people wading the waters or risking their lives. Police can alert tourists before any tragedy."
