Sonu Nigam brings up 'Pahalgam' during concert, feels 'threatened' by Kannada fan

A video of singer Sonu Nigam is going viral from his recent concert in East Point College, Bengaluru. During the concert, a fan screamed at him, demanding a song in Kannada. The singer paused, addressed the crowd, and humbly expressed his love for the language. He said he respects the people of Karnataka, but felt 'threatened' by the tone of the fan. He also recalled the Pahalgam terrorist attack which claimed 26 lives, and said, "Yahi kaaran hai, Pahalgam mein jo hua hai na? Yahi kaaran hai jo kar rahe ho, jo kiya tha na abhi? (This is the reason for what happened in Pahalgam. This is the reason... what you did just now)."advertisementThe 51-year-old first paused his performance to express his love for the Kannada language and the people of the state. He said in Hindi, "I have sung songs in all languages. But the best songs that I have sung in my life are Kannada songs. Main aapke beech mein jab bhi aata hoon bohut pyaar se aata hoon. Shows toh roz karte hain hum log, lekin jab kabhi bhi Karnataka mein kahi bhi shows hote hain hum bohut izzat se aate hai kyuki aap logo ne humein apna pariwaar maan hail (Whenever I come in front of you, I come with so much love. We do shows every day, but whenever we perform anywhere in Karnataka, we come with respect, because you have made us feel like a part of your family)."advertisementNigam then went on to express disappointment with the fan's behaviour. "Mujhe accha nahi laga ki waha ek ladka jiski umar, jitni uske umar nahi hogi use pehle toh main Kannada gaane ga raha hoon (I didn't like the boy whose age... I have been singing Kannada songs before he was born). He was so rudely threatening me, 'Kannada, Kannada'." "Main puri duniya mein jaha bhi jata hoon, main humesha bolta hoon main, sabko bolta hoon main,14,000 ki audience hogi usme ek awaaz aati hai, 'Kannada'. Toh main unke liye, us ek Kannadiga k liye main kuch line Kannadiga k gaata hoon. Main itni izzat karta hoon aapki, itna pyaar karta hoon. So thoda sa rehna chahiye, aesa nahi karna chahiye aapko (Wherever I go in the world, I tell everyone, in a crowd of 14,000, there will be one Kannada voice. So, I sing for that one Kannadiga fan. I love and respect you so much. You shouldn't behave like this)."The crowd appeared silent while Nigam was addressing them during the concert. He reportedly resumed his performance thereafter. Sonu Nigam started his singing career in the early 1990s and became famous with songs like 'Sandese Aate Hain' and 'Yeh Dil Deewana'.
