Two dead in pedestrian, train accident at Miles Newton Bridge; search for child continues
FREMONT – Two people are confirmed dead and one rescued after a train and pedestrian incident Sunday evening.
Rescue efforts are in process for another in the Sandusky River.
Emergency crews are working in the area of the Miles Newton Bridge.
Sandusky County Sheriff Chris Hilton said two women died in the incident with the train. There also were two children involved, with one missing and the other rescued and transferred to a hospital.
'Fremont Police Department, our office, the Ballville Township Fire and Water Rescue, and our boat is out attempting rescue,' Hilton said, about the ongoing rescue attempts in the Sandusky River. He said at least five pedestrians are known to have been involved in the incident.
'We are conducting a search for a 5-year-old juvenile in the water,' he said Sunday evening.
He said there was an infant, age unknown, that has been pulled from the water by a witness.
'That witness did CPR and that child has been taken to (Mercy Health-St. Vincent Medical Center) in Toledo,' Hilton said. 'We have every resource available, Ballville Township Water Rescue, the Sheriff's Office, Fremont Police Department, we have drones, and all that stuff in the air, looking for the 5-year-old missing juvenile.'
At 8 p.m. Sunday, the Fremont Police Department confirmed the Miles Newton bridge has been closed.
People are asked to stay clear of the area.
State Street is open.
The incident took place at about 7:30 p.m.
