BJD slams cancellation of coastal highway tender; calls it double betrayal by Centre

BHUBANESWAR: The BJD on Tuesday voiced strong opposition to the cancellation of the tender for state's coastal highway project by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), describing it as a 'double betrayal by the double-engine government'. BJD vice-president and former minister Sanjay Das Burma told a media conference here that the development has thrown the long-delayed project into uncertainty yet again. He said under the Centre's Bharatmala project, 413 km-long coastal highway was planned and formally announced by Union minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari at Pipili on July 9, 2015. It was proposed that the route from Ratanpur to Chandanpur would be declared a national highway and connected with the proposed coastal highway. The proposed length of the coastal highway was later changed to 346 km. Das Burma said initially it was decided that the highway would be of four-lane and tenders were invited accordingly. But now, after re-evaluation, there are indications that it may be downgraded to a two-lane road, which is completely unacceptable, he said. He urged Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to immediately discuss the matter with the Centre and ensure that the project is executed as originally planned.

BJD flays BJP for neglecting coastal highway project

Bhubaneswar: The Opposition BJD on Tuesday criticised the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre and alleged that non-execution of the ambitious coastal highway project is a 'betrayal' by the 'double engine sarkar'. The BJD vice-president and former minister Sanjay Das Burma said this at a press conference here following the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) recently cancelling the tender for a patch of road work under the project. 'Non-execution of the coastal highway for a decade and the recent cancellation of the tender has pushed the future of this project to uncertainty and we demand the State government to take up the matter with the Centre,' Das Burma told reporters. Stating that the foundation stone of the coastal highway project under the Sagarmala project was laid way back in 2015 by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, the BJD leader said the annulment of tender of the proposed coastal highway was nothing but a 'betrayal' by the double-engine BJP governments at the Centre and in Odisha. Das Burma claimed that the detailed project report (DPR) for the coastal highway in Odisha had been changed thrice and repeated cancellation of tender makes the future of the project 'uncertain'. The BJD leader also raised questions on the move to make the coastal highway road two-lane instead of the original plan to construct four-lane road. The tender annulment notice issued by the Manager (tech) of NHAI-Odisha circle attributed the cancellation to administrative reasons. 'From the beginning, it was said the highway, to be built under this project, would be four-lane and tenders were also called accordingly. However, after the re-evaluation of the project, it has been reported that it will be made two-lane, which is completely unacceptable,' the BJD leader said. The 346 km coastal highway was planned as an alternative and parallel carriageway to the existing NH-16. The project was prepared to connect from Gopalpur in Odisha's Ganjam district to Digha in West Bengal. The BJP leaders were not immediately available for comment on the BJD's allegations.

BJD to stage protest near Raj Bhavan on May 21

BHUBANESWAR: The BJD on Friday announced that it will stage a demonstration in front of the Raj Bhavan on May 21, demanding 27 per cent reservation for socially and educationally backward classes (SEBCs) in all educational institutions including medical, engineering and technical courses. Addressing the media, party leaders Arun Sahoo, Sanjay Das Burma, Pratap Jena and Pradeep Majhi said 11.25 per cent reservation announced by the state government in non-technical and general educational institutions will not help the SEBC students as a large number of seats in colleges are remaining vacant. 'The government has cheated the SEBCs by announcing reservation for vacant seats and describing it as a historic decision,' they said. Senior party leader Ranendra Pratap Swain also held a separate media conference and voiced his opposition. The leaders said that the party had raised the demand for 27 per cent reservation for SEBCs through an adjournment in the February-March budget session of the Assembly.
