Workshop on sarus crane protection held in Tumsar

Nagpur: The Bhandara District Sarus Conservation Committee organized a workshop focusing on community based Sarus crane conservation at Binaki and Gonditola villages of Tumsar, recognized as habitats of these birds. The sessions emphasized the importance of local community participation in protecting these areas. Deputy collector (revenue) Leena Falke inaugurated the workshop, accompanied by officials including Sanjay Jambhulkar (tehsildar, Tumsar), CJ Rahangdale (range forest officer, Tumsar), Shahid Khan (district committee), NT Bahe (agricultural assistant), KVK Sakoli scientists Pramod Parvate, Kanchan Tayade and sarpanchs Devendra Meshram and Sheetal Chinchkhede. Falke acknowledged the community's commitment to sarus crane protection and advocated for increased local participation to enhance bird numbers. Khan provided comprehensive information about the species' biological aspects, habitat needs and conservation challenges, stressing public awareness. KVK Sakoli specialists offered advice on sustainable agricultural practices and diversifying income sources. Bahe stressed the importance of minimising pesticide use to safeguard the crane's habitat. Studies show these birds, being the tallest flying species globally, rely on wetlands and agricultural lands for their existence. Through community education about habitat protection, the programme supports balanced agricultural and wildlife conservation practices. The committee's work indicates promising results for crane preservation in Tumsar taluka and mirrors successful initiatives from Uttar Pradesh, where community participation has helped maintain a stable crane population.
