Varanasi: Under the health department's Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram and Anushka foundation, 70 children suffering from clubfoot recovered after treatment in Varanasi district since 2019, said Dr Sandeep Chaudhary, chief medical officer. He said 512 children were treated under the programme in the district, of whom 64 had recovered fully. In Apr 2025, nine children came for treatment and six underwent surgery. There are clubfoot OPDs at Pt Deendayal Upadhyay Hospital on Saturdays, SSPG Divisional Hospital, Kabirchaura on Wednesdays, and BHU Trauma Center on Thursdays from 9am to 2 pm. He said parents often worried when they noticed newborns having crooked feet, fearing it to be an incurable condition and the fear heightened all the more when the affected child was a girl. The condition is known as 'clubfoot' and it is curable with timely treatment. The CMO said clubfoot was treated using Ponseti method , involving casting of the foot in the first phase to help it straighten gradually using plaster that is changed weekly for 4 to 8 weeks. In the second phase, a minor 10-minute outpatient procedure called tenotomy is performed, to cut the Achilles tendon and increase foot flexibility. Waqf Act to bring transparency, accountability: BJP leader

The Waqf Amendment Act will bring transparency and accountability in the management of Waqf properties, BJP state general secretary Sanjay Rai said on Saturday. As part of a nationwide campaign to create awareness and counter the Opposition's allegations on the issue, the BJP organised a workshop to apprise party workers of the benefits of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. 'The main objective of the act is to ensure that Waqf properties are used for the welfare of the Muslim community, especially the poor and needy,' Sanjay Rai said, speaking to journalists. 'The Opposition parties are spreading misinformation about the Act, claiming that it will take away the rights of Muslims over their mosques, madrasas, and cemeteries,' he said. However, no such thing will take place, he added. The Waqf Act is aimed at stopping the misuse of Waqf properties by land mafia and ensuring that the benefits reach the intended beneficiaries, said Rai. As part of the party's campaign, influential Muslim leaders and heads will be contacted and the Mahila Morcha will contact influential Muslim women and explain the usefulness of the Waqf (Amendment) Act 2025. Prominent among those present on the occasion were BJP metropolitan president Anand Dwivedi, media in-charge Praveen Garg, Minority Morcha president Shadab Alam, Mohammad Aneesh, Sher Ali Khan, M A Khan and Shahnaz Bano, Rajneesh Gupta, Jaya Shukla and Ghanshyam Agarwal.

Rai emphasized that the new reforms aimed to curb encroachments, ensure transparent management of waqf assets, and channel revenues towards the welfare of poor Muslims. Refuting opposition claims, he clarified that no mosques, madrassas, or graveyards would be seized. As part of the campaign, BJP will organize town halls, connect with minority scholars and women leaders, and intensify outreach through media and social platforms. Annually, 33,000 children with clubfoot are born in India, and after complete treatment, they can lead normal lives like other children, provided treatment starts immediately after birth. About 50% of children affected by clubfoot have deformities in both feet. Treatment options include plaster and surgery, decided by the doctor after examining the condition. Anushka Foundation's district coordinator, Sarita Mishra , said that treatment is crucial within the first 3 to 4 months of birth. If treated within this period, there is a 100% chance of correction. If treatment begins after 2 years, there is only a 50% chance of correction.
