Ahmedabad plane crash heightens anxiety among residents living near BPIA
1 2 Bhubaneswar: An Air India plane crashing on a medical college's hostel in Ahmedabad on Thursday, which has claimed 275 lives, has instilled fear among residents living near the flight path of Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) here, with every approaching aircraft triggering anxiety. While the sight of blinking lights and underbellies of planes was once a routine occurrence that went unnoticed, it now evokes unsettling memories of the Ahmedabad tragedy. The incident has transformed a once-ordinary experience into a source of concern for those living near the city airport. Most of the flights, particularly the ones depending on the instrument landing system (ILS), descend from the Baramunda, Khandagiri and Jagamara ends. They approach the runway flying very low, making their underbellies visible and the deafening engine sound making locals shudder. "Flights of all sizes… they just cross our balconies looking like they might land. But we just take it as a routine event. But now one never knows when a plane might come down like the one in Ahmedabad which crashed on a hostel building, almost plunging into the inmates' mess. Those were really horrifying scenes which haunt us even if it happened far away," said senior architect Sanjib Guru, who lives in Baramunda. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like USDJPY đang đi lên không? Towards the Lingaraj shrine side of the runway, there are residential colonies as well. This side of the runway has no ILS, and flights manoeuvre landing manually. "We are not aware of the technicalities, but at the very sound of a flight, we now pray to God. In a fraction of a second, many might die if a plane crashes. My young children also feel traumatised as they are growing up and know what is happening around them," said Priyanshu Sahu, a resident. Mahesh Kumar Padhi, a marine engineer living in Baramunda area, echoes him. "As a flight begins to descend, we hear the sound, and by the time it just flashes over our home, it takes about 30-50 seconds. So, the adrenaline rush is most palpable during those few seconds," said Padhi. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Multilevel parking facility may ease traffic congestion in Cuttack: Experts
1 2 Cuttack: Experts have called for urgent development of multilevel parking facilities in Cuttack to ease the mounting traffic congestion caused by illegal roadside parking and unplanned urban growth. The millennium city is an acute space crunch with narrow roads and limited expansion scope, severely affecting mobility and liveability. Experts said the lack of adequate parking infrastructure is one of the root causes behind haphazard parking, leading to frequent traffic bottlenecks across key areas such as Buxi Bazaar, Naya Sadak, Badambadi and Choudhury Bazaar. "Cuttack was never designed for modern vehicular traffic. With rapid urbanisation and an increasing number of vehicles, multilevel parking is not a luxury but a necessity," said urban planner Sanjib Guru. "It will not only decongest roads but also streamline urban mobility ," he added. Several roads in the city are encroached upon by illegal parking and unauthorised vendors, worsening the situation. Even emergency services are often delayed due to traffic snarls. "The city's arteries are choking. A scientific solution like a multilevel parking lot is essential for the old city to breathe again. It's high time the authorities must act on it," said road safety expert Bikash Mohapatra. Business owners in the city are also feeling the pinch. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! "Even when a few are coming to shops, they are forced to park their vehicles in the front," added Agarwal. "Illegal parking is a major contributor to daily traffic congestion. Without dedicated parking spaces, our enforcement efforts alone can't resolve the issue. A multilevel parking facility would provide a structured solution and help us manage traffic more effectively," said ACP (traffic), Jayanta Dora. Minister for housing and urban development Krushna Chandra Mohapatra said, "We are actively considering proposals for multilevel parking at strategic locations, especially near high traffic zones. Feasibility studies will be done, and accordingly, steps will be taken to streamline the traffic in the city."
