Officials suspected involvement of a person familiar with the mahant's house, as the theft was executed at a time when his wife Abha Mishra was being treated for her ailment in Delhi, and family members were travelling frequently. It is suspected that the thief did not face any problem in opening the cupboards, in which, cash collected as offerings at the temple and the jewellery were kept. It also came to light that a few days ago, a locked box in a room on the first floor of the house was broken into, but since it was empty, no police report was filed. In 2010, a manuscript written by Tulsidas was stolen from Tulsi Ghat but was later recovered by police.
